I’m pleased to report we are expecting 50 plus guests at Wednesday’s breakfast at Café Catalina at Broadwater Parklands to mark the departure of the x-ray and pathology unit on its journey to Vanuatu.
Information has been sent out to Gold Coast based media but if anybody has some contacts in that field you can lean on to publicise the event and the project more generally, then that additional support would be appreciated.
District’s upcoming Learning and Development Days (Assemblies) have been set down for the Gold Coast on Sunday 23rd of April and Casino on Sunday 7th of May.
This is a must attend event for all incoming 2023 – 2024 Club officers, so hopefully we’ll have a strong presence.
This Wednesday, 5th April 2023 we are not meeting at the Surf Club, but at the Cafe Catalina on the Broadwater Parklands, Southport. We expect various dignitaries to attend, including federal, state and local government representatives. Several have already accepted, including our District Governor, Karen Thomas. This is going to be big: over 60 people are already booked.
YOU MUST BOOK - https://www.trybooking.com/CGETL or scan the QRCode. Bookings close on Monday night. This will be one of the most important meetings of the year for all members as well as associate membersand all volunteers who have tirelessly worked to bring this project to fruition. If bookings are closed, contact organiser Greg Bowler via email gregbo@outlook.com.

MUNA? This acronym stands for Model United Nations Assembly, an annual event organised by our District 9640. There were 25 teams, all Year 11 - 12 students, representing nations ranging from miniature states such as Liechtenstein, to majors such as China, Russia, US, UK, to extreme radicals such as North Korea, to middle level countries such as, yes, Australia. And just like is the case in a real-life General Assembly: there were some super eloquent speakers and others seriously need to work on their enunciation and delivery. Some made sense, some didn't. Some were super serious, some irreverent, some have obviously studied drama. But there is one thing you would seldom see at a real UN assembly: laughter. There was plenty of that too! MUNA is actually a United Nations initiative and MUNA events are held throughout the world. The winning team from our district competes in the MUNA Nationals in Canberra in August.
Surfers Sunrise didn't enter a team; actually, as far as I know, we never ever have. So why do I post this blog on our club's website and bulletin, you ask? Simply because MUNA is good! No, not just good. Real good. And if you ever hear somebody whinging about today's youth being clueless, uninterested in current affairs, inarticulate, wouldn't know Sweden from Switzerland... put them into a headlock and drag them to attend next year's event! Our club has been strongly involved in just about every youth program and I think we must look for a team for next year's to fill the gap.
Expect a more detailed report in the April edition of the District Governor's Newsletter.

We must all do our bit to save the planet. I've just unplugged a row of electric cars that nobody was using.
“Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. You don’t have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
Leader to his speech writer, after suffering a crushing defeat:
"I had better rally the team. Give me a brief, positive blurb that includes Defeat, Defence and Detail."
"OK, 'ere it is", said his speech writer: "W'en de winneng hrse jumped over de fence, de feet went first and den de tail."
