President's Message

Welcome to the Surfers Sunrise Post,

The month of September for Rotary is Basic Education and Literacy Month.  We all know how critical reading and writing are for success in life.  RI provides a variety of resources to assist clubs with projects.  Our club did send old books to various places in the hope that these books enhance basic education skills as reading is critical for gaining information, communicating, making agreements, reducing poverty and improving health.  Perhaps as well as adding toys to the wheelchair cartons sent overseas we could add a couple of books in each wheelchair.

Geoff Croad will be away until 14th October but he has updated those who need to know about the order of parts for the Wheel Chairs from China.  I was in Yeppoon late last week and guess what I saw-  a Wheelchair for kids chair being used up there.

Quote for the Week: While on the subject of Books: "Life is like a book. Some chapters are sad, some happy, and some exciting.  But if you never turn the page, you will never know what the next chapter holds."

See you Wednesday.

Doug Lipp,
President 2023-24.
Stories
This coming Wednesday: Vanessa Jansen
Vanessa Jansen is the Membership Chair of our District 9640 and also a member of the highly successful Rotary Club of Gold Coast Corporate. Her main topic will be membership development (of course), particularly corporate membership. Whilst we already have been successful in attracting corporate members ourselves, there is always something one can learn from one of the leaders in this field.
Story of Win-Win-Win relationship
Please meet John French, an Automotive Training Consultant and Assessor at the Gold Coast Trades College (GCTC) at Currumbin. For the past two years, he has dedicated his Saturday mornings to delivering a wheely bin full of empty bottles and cans at our project shed in Arundel. “I very much enjoy the company of Rotary members as well as seeing the brilliant work carried out by them” John said when I caught up with him.
All staff and students at GCTC participate in environment and recycling units as part of their curriculum. Recycling is a win-win for all, as it keeps the recyclable cans and bottles out of landfill while encouraging and re-enforcing the subject we train.

In turn, the empties are then collected from our shed by Express Recycling Nerang, under the Containers for Change scheme. Express Recycling doesn’t just collect containers from our wheelchair shed, but also from multiple high-rise locations. This makes them one of our major fundraising partners.

Thank you, John and thank you, Express Recycling! Your efforts make a great difference!
Vale Richard Smith
Many of you would remember Richard Smith, who, together with his charming wife Sue transferred from Toowoomba to the Gold Coast in 2016 and joined our club. Richard was for many years in charge of Vocational Services and organised the annual Pride of Workmanship Awards. A couple of years ago, he was unable to continue his active membership due to ill health.

Richard passed away last week. Our heartfelt condolences go to Sue and the Smith family.
National Youth Science Forum 2024: Applications are open
Over the years, Surfers Sunrise has supported a fair number of successful applicants to the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). Who could forget Sophie Seumahu (photo left, when she reported on her experiences in March 2022), or Briana Dorrough (photo right, 2021)?

Well, applications for the NYSF 2024 are now open. So, do you know a genuine Science student who might qualify? Note, despite the rather stiff price tag of $2,450, plus $65 application fee, competition for the places available is quite severe. However, in the past, our club has partly subsidised this. More information on their website: https://www.nysf.edu.au/

OK, we Rotarians are usually quite serious people. Until we have a good laugh at our own seriousness... Ed.

"The paper these days is only half the size it used to be!"
"Of course, dear, this is simply because in the olden days they used to report both sides of the story!"

Digital communications have made it possible to reach more people in faster and cheaper ways, but a loser is still a loser. You could make the case that technology has made it possible to blow one’s reputation faster and easier than ever. Guy Kawasaki, Silicon Valley venture capitalist.

Your opinion matters. Not to me, but I'm certain that someone, somewhere cares just a little bit.
