President's Message

Great to be back on the wonderful Gold Coast, even if it is colder and wetter the Melbourne.

From all reports, with the photos to prove it, a great time was had by all who attended the social outing organised by Adrian Crowe at the Teppanyaki Restaurant in Labrador.

Robby and I had an interesting time in Melbourne, which ranged from confronting (and winning) some squatters in Robby’s brother's vacant house, to finding the best restaurant we have ever been to (Ish in Gertrude St, Fitzroy).

I believe we had a good casual meeting last Wednesday with a good turnout of members, and also a reasonable turnout at drinks at Benowa Tavern on Thursday evening.

Almost every Saturday morning, along with PE Paul Seymour, Fundraiser Legend Ross Augustine, 'Onion King' Angus Miller and I catch up with Honorary Member Barry Lee.  Barry was, until about ten years ago, a full member of our club. He was instrumental in us acquiring our project shed in Arundel and organised a number of very successful fundraising functions. These Saturday morning meetings are like mini Rotary meetings. Barry’s knowledge and, at times sage counsel, have been invaluable to me. I have tried many times to entice Barry back to be a full member of the club again, but sadly, personal events prevent him doing so.

The meetings with Barry are further proof that almost all Rotarians are cut from the same cloth and continue to live their lives as per Rotary ideals of The Four Way Test, and continue to adhere to the Rotary mantra of Service Sbove Self.

Board Meeting this Tuesday 3/06/25 morning 07:00 am, don’t be late.

Remember - nothing changes if nothing changes, and do as you fear most.

Stories
This coming Wednesday 4th June: Kath Koch
Kath Koch is the District Chair of the Rotary's international Youth Exchange Program. She will bring us up to date on what is happening in YEP in our District as well as internationally.

In the past, our club has hosted and sponsored numerous Youth Exchange students. Is it time to engage in this fantastic program again?
Meet our Volunteers: Claire Forster
OK, so I admit that I realised that Claire does not match the average age profile of our volunteers... 😊 Like a breath of fresh air, Claire joined our team at the Wheelchair Project shed only recently. So what motivates a young woman to work on the conversion of old bicycles to wheelchairs?
“I migrated from Canada to Australia in 2017” she said, “and I just wanted to take a break from my work as a physiotherapist.” So she noticed our advertisement and decided that this would be truly different.

So what does she do when not pulling bicycles apart or moulding plastic chairs to fit the wheelchairs? She plays squash, she goes snowboarding (not on the Gold Coast though...), she reads authors such as Terry Pratchett (yes, too high up the food chain for me) and Tolkien (Lord of the Rings), or listens to music such as Jack Johnson or James Taylor. Her short to medium term goal is a change in career, perhaps in Emergency Services, Ambulance Officer or similar.

Her life philosophy: “Si ventus desit reniga” (When the wind does not blow, row!)

Welcome to the Surfers Sunrise Project Team!

Inspirations - well, sort of... 040625
Here is one, compliments of Gerald East:
A new study found that people who take their coffee black are more likely to exhibit psychopathic traits.
And people who order a quad shot, non-fat, vanilla soy, extra foam, light whip with caramel drizzle (if they happen to be in front of them in the queue), are more likely to be their victims.
[Warning: I take my coffee black! Ed.]
