Greetings, fellow members, associate members and friends of Surfers Sunrise Rotary,
Last Saturday I attended the Wheelchair Shed’s annual Christmas party. Over 50 people gathered for a very pleasant afternoon with fellow volunteers and their families and partners.
At this time of year, when we are all enjoying the Christmas spirit, I urge all Rotarians to look around. Someone in your family or your neighbourhood may not be experiencing the Christmas as we know it. Reach out to these people to see if they are ok. This maybe as little as a phone call, visit or helping them through this period.
Last Thursday, our fortnightly social evening at the Benowa Tavern was well attended. A reminder: everyone is welcome; members, volunteers and friends. It is always on the Thursday after our informal Wednesday meeting, from 5pm.
Remember, don’t put off till tomorrow what can be done today. And that includes booking for our Christmas breakfast next Wednesday! Details below. And just in case your partner ask “are there any women there?”, let me assure you: there are!
Our Annual General Meeting is not just about the election (mostly confirmation) of the incoming board of directors for 2026/27. We will need to approve the accounts for 2024/25, and we'll also need to elect a President Elect Nominee 2027/28.
In a well run club, most of that should not take up a lot of time. But this is also your opportunity to voice any suggestions (and yes, constructive criticism) you may have. Be there.
Last Wednesday, a cameraman from SBS came to the wheelchair shed to generate vision of our production facility where 'Rough Terrain' wheelchairs are made. This was followed by an interview with Des La Rance, who developed the concept of making low-cost wheelchairs by using parts from discarded bicycles, as well as Wheelchair Trust Chairman Geoff Croad.
Watch out for it to be screened on SBS in the near future!

As we do every year, Surfers Sunrise will deliver a load of Christmas presents to St John's Crisis Centre in Surfers Paradise. the present should be suitable for children (any age, any gender), valued around $10 - $30, unwrapped. Bring them along to our next 'formal' meeting on 10th December, or to our Christmas Breakfast on 17th December. Ian Mayberry, as he has done in many previous years, will coordinate and deliver them.
Mario Fairlie, who is a director of the organisation, advised that this year, St John's Crisis Centre will prepare some 250 Christmas hampers, specifically selecting toys etc to suit each recipient family's needs (that's why you mustn't wrap the presents).

Yesterday, our associate members took a break from their usual Saturday morning toil, closed the shed and went for lunch and a couple of drinks at the pub... Well deserved, fellows! (Photo by Al Sirovs. More photos on our Facebook page)

Isn’t it strange that the adjective for metal is metallic.
Which is strange, because that’s not true for iron. Which is ironic, isn’t it?
To be forgiven, the person has to be sorry... ... it’s a course of action. A single act of repentance is something that makes a person who committed the evil feel better, but not the person against whom the evil was committed. Jodi Picoult – The Storyteller
I’ve been trying to break up with my girlfriend, an Optician. But it’s really hard.
Every time I tell her that I can ‘t see her anymore, she moves closer and says “How about now?”
