President's Message

Mitch Brown
member photo
Hi everyone,

Last week’s meeting saw a productive Club Assembly wherein committees brainstormed to set goals, action plans and KPIs for inclusion in a Club strategic plan. A brief summary of the issues identified by the committees follows later in this bulletin.

To recap, I would like all committees to have finalised their proposed goals, action plans and KPIs so they can be considered by the Board at its next meeting on 19 October. A proposed strategic plan will shortly thereafter be submitted for consideration by members.

Good news on the Containers for Change front, with Paul Seymour and Geoff Croad arranging meetings with stakeholders to get this important fund-raising initiative moving forward again. Thanks Geoff and Paul for your hard work in this area.

Social meeting this week and beverages at the Benowa Tavern on Thursday starting at 4.30pm.

Enjoy your week.

Cheers,
Mitch Brown,
President 2022-23

Last week: Strategic Planning Club Assembly
Last Wednesday, President Mitch Brown conducted a Club Assembly with the specific purpose of Strategic Planning.  Individual committee chairmen gathered their committee members together, then presented a brief report at the end of it.  Here is a brief summary (the full report, as presented by the chairs, will be emailed to all members).

Youth Services - Ashleigh Symes
The aim is to continue our participation in the major youth programs, such as RYTS, RYPEN, RYLA, the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF). To ensure we find qualified participants, we'll strengthen existing relationships, particularly with the Surf Club and the QLD Health Sciences Academy, and develop new relationships, such as with the PCYC and Gold Coast Youth Services. Other sources could be home schooling organisations.

Public Image, including Public Relations and Social Media - Nick Cole

Action Plan: Continue the $100 per member annual contribution, establish regular timeline for PHFs, hold an information session with guest speaker (already aranged for January 2023, support the TRF Movie Night.

Membership - Angus Miller
Main objective: gain new members and retain existing members.

The changed attendance rules allow a focus on business people who may not be available on a weekly basis or even have lenghty absences due to busines travel
Tie in with PR, Social Media marketing to attract a younger demographic

Services, including Wheelchair Trust - Larry Murray, Mark Twyford
Input from Al, Larry and myself  for the services portfolio.
  • Relationship between the Club and the Trust with Wheelchairs being the Club's longest continuous service project.
  • Raised issues in regards to the current and future of the Wheelchair project
  • Possible sublease to the Mens Shed organisation.
  • Discussed ideas then may progress and enhance our current space at the Community Centre- tie in with current lease renewal strategic plan
  • Some ideas include making more items from donated bikes and recycle more parts (sell), timber pet products (kennels), recycle electronics similar to Substation33
  • Establish online/virtual shop to sell items, enhanced by social media promotions/posts etc.
  • Need change in culture at the current operation, to insular (closed shop).
  • Need to review current Trust document.

Separating the rubbish from recyclables
There is a lot of work out at our project shed which is not directly related to making wheelchairs or construction of buildings: Al Sirovs sent me this picture of one of our Associate Members, Ron Thompson, dismantling bikes. A fair portion of the components, such as the tyres, the pedals, etc are not suitable for either use on the wheelchairs nor for recycling. The aluminium components such as the wheels (without tyres) are separated as they fetch a higher price than iron or steel. The latter goes into a huge 10 m3 skippy bin, collected by Sims Metal on a regular basis. All proceeds go back into the wheelchairs account.
