Welcome back Franz! Hopefully you didn’t get too many blisters from your mountain walks. [Not at all - on mountain walks one wears proper boots. More likely getting blisters walking around the cities and Austrian mediaeval castles... ☺ Ed.]

The good news is that District has given approval for the Rotary Foundation grant funding of the X-ray training at the Mauna Health Centre to be carried over until May 2024.

The latest indications are that the dispatch of the building and associated materials to the site on Pentecost Island may be delayed so that the x-ray and pathology equipment can be delivered simultaneously with the building. Hopefully, an update in that regard will be available by the end of this week.

Changeover is set for 25 June 2023 and don’t forget to cast your vote for Rotarian of the year. [PLEASE! Only 12 votes received so far, and very broadly spread. Remember: it's anonymous, so I can't chase you up. Do it now! Ed.]

Social meeting this Wednesday and beverages at the Benowa Tavern on Thursday afternoon at the usual time of 4.30 pm.

Enjoy your week.

Stories
Last week's Guest Speaker: Helena Griffiths
Helena Griffiths is from the Australian Institute of Ultrasound (AIU). She presented on ultrasound technology and highlighted just how far we have come from the early days of large uneconomical ultrasound machines to now handheld devices that can plug into your mobile phone, providing significant developments in health diagnosis. This technology is also used in natural disasters, or as President Mitch suggested, in the battlefield. The proficient use of ultrasound in medical diagnosis due to the low cost and the low risks of sound wave technology over alternatives such as X-ray, where radiation is a factor.

AIU needs volunteers to assist trainee doctors in developing their ultrasound skills. For anyone with some spare time looking to volunteer please get in touch - Click here - it might just save your life! Also, please check out the PDF in the Download Section on the right.

Preceeding Helena, Mehmet Tavli from the Rotary Club of Nerang briefly presented on his club's project to address homelessness. A full article on his talk and video will be in next week's edition.

It’s not that he bites off more than he can chew. He chews more than he bites off.

The painful warrior famoused for fight,
After a thousand victories once foil'd,
Is from the book of honour razed quite,
And all the rest forgot for which he toil'd.
