Greetings, fellow members, associate members and friends of Surfers Sunrise Rotary,
It is good to be back on board after a rough spell after my right knee replacement and subsequent stomach infection, but now all in the clear. Many thanks to PP Andy for standing in in my absence and all the well wishes. One really appreciates the Rotary family.
This week’s meeting marks the start of Rotary’s ‘Foundation Month', dedicated to The Rotary Foundation (TRF), our organisation’s major charity. In many clubs, this is (undeservedly) not much talked about, unless... one is looking for a grant! Over the years, our club has received numerous grants, not just for our Wheelchair Trust but also for other projects.
For now well over 10 years, our club members have every year contributed $100 each to TRF. One of the primary Rotary member recognitions, the Paul Harris Fellowship (PHF) award, is obtained by the club donating $US 1,000. In our club, over 20 of our members (yes, well over half!) hold a PHF, many of them multiples. [Example: Image right PHF+2, ie total of 3. Ed.] But you may not be aware that you can also make a personal donation, which counts towards a PFH. And you could well choose a lesser charity: On the international website Charity Navigator, The Rotary Foundation holds a very rare 4-star, 100% rating. Many of our members have done so, and some of our members have donated well over $10,000.
Check out the article below by our club’s Foundation chair, Elizabeth Celi. There is a link included to a webinar on this coming Saturday. This would be well worth your time.
Remember, don’t put off till tomorrow what can be done today.
Anna Caldwell is the Community Engagement Lead for LifeFlight (formerly CareFlight) Gold Coast and Brisbane. Anna will share stories and information about the vital work LifeFlight does across Queensland and the world, including stories from our rescue crews, the role of community support, and the incredible operations behind our helicopters and jets. If there is time, she will also talk about their First Minutes Matter community education program, which empowers everyday people with the skills to provide critical care in the vital moments before emergency help arrives.
Welcome to October and Rotary Foundation Month. Its full name is ‘The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International’. “The Foundation”, as we commonly refer to it, came into existence in 1917, when (then) Rotary International President Arch Klump initiated an Endowment Fund and, once this fund had reached $US 5,000 (big dollars in those days!), it was renamed The Rotary Foundation. Today, annual grants are over $US 417 Million. Download the Fact Sheet in the Download Section on the right.
Lisa Hunt, our Immediate Past District Governor and now our District Chair for The Rotary Foundation, will run two major events in October:

Originally from Mauritius, that small island in the Indian Ocean, some 800 Km to the east of Madagascar, Nemours arrived in Australia in 1978. Talking about an allrounder: before migrating, he was in the Mauritian Police force, upon arrival on these shores he has worked in Plastic Injection models, in food retail, as a self employed gardener, as a postie, as a business driver for the elderly and then driving disabled children. But top this: for 11 years, he worked for the Australian Tax Office... His is a big family: Married with four children and 5 grandchildren, he has brothers and sisters all over Australia.
When Channel 9 ‘A Current Affair’, a couple of months ago, broadcast their story about our wheelchairs project, he decided that he wanted to join. And here he is, restoring bicycles or taking them apart to salvage the frame components we use for wheelchairs.
And when he has a moment to relax? “ I enjoy gardening, he said. I listen to 60-70’s pop music, I enjoy doing household chores, washing and ironing (is he the perfect husband, or what?), and... I watch the Gentleman’s sport, Boxing”, he said. Welcome to the Wheelchairs Team, Nemours!

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary. HL Mencken, US Journalist, 1880 - 1956

I did that, but now, what should I do with the letters?
