Gidday to Surfers Sunrise Rotafy Club members and associates, friends of Rotary and others.
President Paul is overseas in Germany or the UK.
An excellent ‘formal’ meeting was held on Wednesday at our second home whilst the Surfers Paradise Surf Club undergoes extensive renovations, the TRYP by Wyndham Hotel. Unfortunately, our speaker system was used at our Golf Day and due to the excitement of of the day, charging of the batteries was overlooked. I felt bad for our guest speaker Melanie De Luca who is a quietly spoken young lady. Not fazed by the lack of ampliflication, Melanie was simply terrific. She battled on and her speech was excellent.
Our Golf Day was very successful in spite of the weather. Playing Golf in 37 degrees is far from pleasant. In spite of the heat, we had an almost a full roster, unbelievable. A huge thanks to Doug Lipp, Charles Thomasson, Ross Augustine, Darryl Brown and Bevan Sim.
I had occasion to go to our Project Shed on Saturday morning, and I am so glad I did. One of our newest members, Tulip Penney, brought along a ‘Halloween' themed morning tea. As good as the morning tea was though, when I arrived, Tulip was half way through a ‘speech’ to our Associates. The bit I heard was from her heart and she spoke about how, in her journey with Rotary, she wants to make a difference by embracing our ideals in ‘Service Above Self’.
A casual meeting this Wednesday at the Surf Club with drinks at Benowa Tavern from 4.30 pm on Thursday.
Remember - nothing changes if nothing changes and do as you fear most.
Yes, this coming Wednesday 5th November will be a social meeting. While, during the Surf Club's renovations, our 'formal' meetings are held at the TRYP Hotel in Southport, on alternate weeks we'll continue to meet socially at the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club. Come along for a cuppa and/or breakfast. The meeting will be in the upstairs venue, if the weather is nice, on the balcony. Lots of good banter and laughter, and - believe it - sometimes there are more club related matters discussed and solutions determined than on a formal meeting!
Melanie (Photo - with Vice President Andy Bell) recently arrived on the Gold Coast on a Working Holiday visa. She only politely enquired whether it would be ok for her to visit our club, as her father is very active in Rotary in her home country, Argentina. Well, talking about an opportune moment: regrettably, the guest speaker, who originally was expected, had to cancel at late notice. "So, how about coming in as Guest Speaker?" I asked her...
Unfortunately, your Editor was unable to attend, travelling interstate, and "somebody" had forgotten to recharge the batteries of our PA system - please accept our apologies for that, Melanie! Still, I understand that the meeting went well. Perhaps we need to get you back again, next time with a functioning PA system!
Last Monday's Surfers Sunrise Golf Day, one of our regular fundraising events, again was very successful, raising around $7,000. All proceeds to go towards our 'Rough Terrain Wheelchairs' project and to local charities. Regrettably, your Editor was living it up in Sydney, so wasn't there to take the usual photos. Check our Facebook page for some photos that were sent to me by fellow members - hopefully more to come.
Overall winner:Daniel Bisker's team (names to come), Rotary Club winner:Gold Coast Corporate Rotary, Corporate Team winner: Astill Cronin Lawyers (photo). Thank you to all the players and sponsors. It's a great way to raise some funds whilst having a lot of fun. And, as always, a special thank you to the principal organisers, Charles Thomasson, Doug Lipp and Fundraising Director Ross Augustine.

Here is some advice for you ladies: Men have two emotions, and they can’t tell them apart. If you see a gleam in his eye, make him a sandwich, and you’ll find out which one soon enough.
Radical movements keep ratcheting up their demands, because nothing enervates a cause more than success. Crusaders resent having their purpose stolen out from under them by the fulfillment of their quest; reaching the promised land leaves seekers bereft. There's little to do in a utopian oasis but sip coconut water. So the journey must never be completed. The goal must remain out of reach. To preserve the perfect impossibility of getting there, the desired end point becomes ever more extreme. Lionel Shriver ‘The Mandibles’.
