Greetings, fellow members, associate members and friends of Surfers Sunrise Rotary,
After a three-week overseas trip to see my daughter Tanya in Germany, it is good to be back home. A big thank you to Andy and Franz for their assistance while I was away.
November marks Rotary Foundation Month, a time to celebrate the incredible impact we make together through our Foundation. From Rotary`s tireless efforts to eradicate polio to empowering communities through sustainable projects, the Rotary Foundation transforms generosity into lasting change. Rotary Foundation thanked Surfers Sunrise you your leadership and dedication.
More good news: our new member Tulip Penney, who has taken on the portfolio of Public Relations with vigour, has designed a new poster (see Download Files) for our upcoming Big Bike Sale at the wheelchair shed on Saturday, 13th December. Please distribute it to your friends. Many of the bikes on sale are way below their real value, value that can only be achieved if (a) the labour spent on refurbishing them is free and (b) the bikes have been donated in the first instance!
The shout out this week goes to Ross Augustine who organised last Saturday's Bunnings sausage sizzle, a very successful fundraising event, as well as a great networking opportunity for Rotarians.
Last Thursday evening at the Benowa Tavern, we met for our fortnightly social evening, which was well attended. A reminder that everyone is welcome. It is always on the Thursday, the day after our informal Wednesday meeting, from 5pm.
Remember, don’t put off till tomorrow what can be done today.
Tulip, nominated by Mario Fairlie, was recently inducted into our club. Since then, she has taken on her designated role of running Public Relation with vigour and drive! This Wednesday, she'll tell you about her background, her passions and her visions for the future.
Another big Bunnings Sausage Sizzle on Saturday, at their Nerang Store. Haven't received any results yet, but Saturdays are always good! Thanks to all the helpers, President Paul, Ian, Ross, Darrell, Bevan, Fred, Doug, Charles, Mario, Gus, Rock, Al and Tulip. (Photo by Tulip)
This year's Christmas Breakfast will be held on the top floor of theTRYP by Wyndham Hotel (where we had the Changeover). Enjoy top views, in salubrious surroundings (linen table cloth etc), with the wonderful Rotary fellowship of Rotarians and their guests. Partners, Associates, Friends of Rotary, are all welcome.
Juices are served in the foyer from 06:30 am, then we'll move to the top floor for the main meal, which includes unlimited brewed coffee and tea. No long speeches, just enjoy the spirit of Christmas. Menu choices are listed on the Trybooking site.
YOU NEED TO BOOK. CLick on this link https://www.trybooking.com/DHSPL, or scan the QR Code on the right. Bookings close on Wednesday, 10th December.
Alec (left) is the grandson of one of our longest-standing volunteers, Peter Martin, whom I interviewed about 4 years ago.
At a mere 26 years of age, at first sight, one might think that he doesn’t fit the average mould of the wheelchair shed worker – too young, isn’t he? But then, getting to know him a bit better, you’ll find out that his favourite style of music is... The Beatles, or The Doors, just to name two bands that indeed made “real music” in the 60’s and 70’s. [Links provided for some of the younger generation who might ask “The who??” [Yes, them as well... 😊 Ed.] And, reaching back to his ancestry, (Portuguese) classical music.
Professionally, he is a qualified accountant, specialising in Taxation and Trusts. He plays Golf, goes bushwalking – “by myself, I want to immerse myself, just watch the wildlife, listen to the birds,” he added. And he draws and paints pictures. Go to our Facebook page and you’ll find a sample of his work.
His principal goal is to start a family... (sorry girls, too late – he is in a steady relationship!) Welcome to the Surfers Sunrise Wheelchair Team, Alec!
Duty Roster - note: subject to change - please check every week. Note: Fellowship duty also is expected to be at the Project Shed on the Saturday following the meeting

“Do you have any accomplishments in your last job?”
“I am personally responsible for several new rules in the employee handbook.”
“Did you write them?”
“That’s not what I said.”

My wife asked me if I could clear the kitchen table.
I had to take a running start, but I made it, with an inch to spare.
