Two years ago, the Australian Government announced it would scrap the diesel submarine contract with France and instead collaborate with the UK and US on the next generation nuclear submarine under what has become known as the AUKUS. This seemed to catch a lot of people by surprise, but the reality is slightly different. So why did Australia take this major strategic step?
