Last Saturday, a sizeable team of members, Rotaractors and volunteers assembled at the Project Shed. The task: to pack a container, destined for the Solomon Islands, with some 75 wheelchairs, as well as about 57 school desks and 186 chairs, plus lots of other paraphernalia such as bags full of hospital linen and boxes of books squeezed into the gaps. The school furniture was driven down from a Toowoomba State School. Prior to loading, a small army of cleaners, armed with a pressure cleaner, buckets and rags washed off thick layers of outback dust that had settled on the desks and chairs... Mid-morning, we gathered for our usual coffee and cakes. One of our newest volunteers, Gaye Miles (she had only this week been discharged from hospital) rolled up with a bucket full of delicious hot scones, complete with butter and jam. No leftovers there, let me assure you! Good on ya, Gaye!
Some four hours later, the container was packed and Angus 'Onion King' Miller had a nice sausage, bacon & egg roll ready for us all. Some might say that there must be better ways to spend a Saturday morning bathed in glorious weather. But those who were there would agree: what great fellowship we had, all while making a big difference to a lot of disabled and disadvantaged children in the Solomon Islands. A big thank you to all who helped.
