 Our Youth Services Director Chris Thurtell is looking for nominations for RYPEN, the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment.
What is RYPEN? Held from Friday, 22nd May to 1 pm Sunday 24th May at Bornhoffen PCYC, Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN) is a weekend residential experience for youth aged 14-16 years. It is designed to develop skills that will assist them in the transition to adulthood. Participants are involved in a variety of workshops and activities, which provide an opportunity for them to personally develop, gain self confidence, communication skills, challenge themselves, build friendships, and develop life skills. Firstly I would like to apologize to my sponsor club as I have forgotten to tell them that I would be on Europatour for most of March and so I would be unable to do my monthly report for March. I went on Europatour 2015 for 22 days with 53 other exchanges from my district in Germany. The first night was hard as I didn’t know many people because I was unable to meet them all at the Rotex Wochenende in Paderborn but like always I was accepted into really good friends with some of the Brazilians and Argentinians. I had so much fun and I am sort of sad at the moment because it is over but I know that I will have more experiences like this in the near future :).

Neil Thurlow was at the door, Andy Bell was Chairman (for Chris Thurtell)) as well as Sergeant.
We had apologies from over half of the club (and it wasn't even cold yet!!): President Conrad Martens who seems to have gone missing in action, Mario Fairlie, Paul Seymour, Chris Thurtell, Ray Higgs, Barry Lea, Adrian Crowe, Des La Rance, Mitch Brown, Tony Bird, Larry Murray and Doug Lipp.
We understand that Sue Lipp has been admitted to Hospital. Our prayers go out to you, Sue, and we all wish you a speedy recovery.
 Vice President Elect Ian Mayberry welcomed all members and our Guests, regular Tania Laird (guest of Andy Bell) and our Youth Exchange Student Laura Burtscher.
Ian reported on the handover of the Kane Bennett House the previous Friday (see picture on left), where Surfers Sunrise staged a BBQ for the trades people who donated their time. For those who have not followed the story so far: Kane Bennett recently was tragically killed in a lightning strike whilst having a picnic with his family in a Gold Coast park. Former Gold Coast City Councillor Grant Pforr organized a massive appeal to complete the started restoration of the Bennett family's home. Angus Miller supplied all the food, Ian Mayberry all the drinks and Terry O'Shea brought a bunch of flowers for the lady of the house. Well done, fellows, thank you!
Wheelchair Trust Chairman Daryl Sanderson surely would have had all sorts of exciting experiences at The Shed, however, due to lack of time, this was the first time in months when the doyen of The Shed didn't get a word in edgeways... :-)
"Our" District Governor Elect Nominee for 2018/19, Darrell Brown, reported on the District Conference in Goondiwindi. From the dinner on Friday night through to the conclusion on Sunday, it was without question a very successful event. And, importantly, "Goondi appreciated the custom", brought to the town by around 500 Rotarians and their entourage, who came and spent some money in the town. [For example, yours truly and had a superbly tasty Rump Steak, and his better half had a Burramundi (yes, fresh) at the Royal Hotel on Friday night. And the price was very reasonable indeed, together with a half price bottle of wine. However, finishing the latter was not necessarily the brightest idea your Editor had at that weekend... :-)] Besides all the speakers, the incoming and outgoing GSE Teams (see District Website), there were also 'Cotton Tours' where visitors could visit a real cotton farm and experience the vastness of those plantations. Then, of course, was the legendary Bush Dance on Saturday night...
And, wink wink, nudge nudge: When you nominated Darrell for DG in his absence: did you actually consider the amount of work involved to stage a conference? In a word: lots. In three words: lots and lots! And we will be the organizing club!

 .jpg) Des started the presentation with the segment broadcast on Ray Martin's 'A Current Affair' in about October 1997, which depicted the first ten wheelchairs delivered to Fiji. Channel Nine arranged for the entire episode to be filmed and it was this exposure to national television which really put our wheelchairs project "on the map". You can read about this also on my report 'The first 10 wheelchairs to go into Fiji - August 1997' which can be downloaded from our club's website Home Page downloads at www.rotarysurferssunrise.org. Over 18 years later, I still consider this to be one of my most cherished life experiences.
Daryl then continued with his account of the Wheelchair Trust's involvement with Palen Creek Correctional Centre, near Rathdowney. Palen Creek has been associated with our club for many years. A very low security prison (there are no fences, no locks, no guards), the prisoners are making wheelchairs for ultimate shipment to their destinations. We send them a kit, they supply the bike frames and associated labour. So far, Palen Creek has made some 980 wheelchairs for us. The prison recently celebrated its 80th anniversary, and Des and Daryl were invited to join in the celebrations. "We were treated like dignitaries" Daryl declared. Special treatment, special transport... Well, you ARE dignitaries!

Catch up with Felicity’s extensive report fresh off the net from Helsinki.
Our (inbound) exchange students are having a bush weekend in Stanthorpe weekend after next. Looking for a volunteer to drive the bus with our six local kids out to Stanthorpe on Friday 20th and bring them back on Sunday the 22nd. They are all really excited about this new “Australian” bush experience. More details on Wednesday.
Also whilst not strictly Surfers Sunrise business I was so happy to see Christian from Denmark, who is currently attending Emmanuelle College ( as part of our districts intake), score a goal for Surfers Apollo in his first game for the club. First met Christian ( who reportedly plays at a high level in Denmark) at the Grafton expedition and I got him a start at Surfers where my son plays so it has been a while in the making. It made a youth director very happy not only the goal but the way he has embraced (getting flattened) the” Australian” robust style of play! We won 3-2.

 This week's meeting is specifically set aside to introduce people to our Rotary Club. Simon Brook has a special Guest Speaker engagement lined up: The Ride for RYLA guys, (Julian Buttgieg & Glen Gorton). They rode a Rickshaw around India, just to promote the Rotary!
So, start working on your list on the people you are going to invite!

It is starting two weeks after Easter. And it is held in Goondiwindi, so it is certainly a conference with a difference just from its location alone.

 Damien FitzgeraldDamien was educated at Downlands College, JCU/UQ (Biomedical Science). He is now a grazier with partner Jenny in the Somerset region, Damien and Jenny run a small, but ever expanding Boutique Meats business from their cattle property, “Castell Park” named after Damien’s Grandfather.
Damien has extensive international military and civilian management experience across Asia, Africa and the Middle East, most recently saw tenure in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Pakistan for a year and a half as Country Manager of a global project company.
Damien’s 25 years of security and program management experience stems from a combination of military operations, disaster relief program consultancy and security/safety management in both private and government sectors.
His service with 6 Battalion RAR, and his long association with the military in a number of war zones has been the catalyst for his involvement with his local RSL and the “Mates for Mates” Program.
Mates4Mates provides physical and psychological rehabilitation for current and ex-serving Australian Defence Force (ADF) members who are wounded, injured or ill. We also support the families of these Brave Mates. Mates4Mates is independent, apolitical and non-religious.
Mates4Mates provides holistic rehabilitation programs designed to provide realistic challenges to all participants, with objectives to "stretch" them both physically and psychologically. Families also require practical and emotional support. We're always there when needed, ensuring that our service personnel and their families receive the highest possible level of care and assistance they deserve.

our Sergeant decided to simply fine anyone who wouldn't come up with a joke... Early in the morning..?? when all the blood is working hard in your stomach region rather than in your brain??
Fortunately, none of the jokes told were printable in a family publication, so your Editor thankfully didn't have to write any of them down!
