Hi Everyone
Hope you all had a wonderful long weekend- the weather has been sensational although we definitely need a little rain. Its great that the tourists are all disappearing and we can reclaim our little slice of heaven – the long weekend certainly had them hanging around a bit longer than we would have liked.

Did anyone watch the tennis yesterday? Although the match was disappointing (not for Novak of course) I couldn’t help but reflect on what sensational men those players are- when you look at the injuries they carry and the personal pain they go through, you’d have to say that its not a pretty boy sport. [Yeah, not like Rugby or Boxing... Ed. ☺] And in their remarks they were both so respectful and grateful for their support, it was a credit to sportsmanship. Long may that continue (and lets hope our brats wake up one day!)

So what’s going on in the World of Rotary. Well we had an excellent speaker last week- (even if I did get his name wrong) and David gave a great overview of naturopathic approach to health and wellbeing. He has kindly offered a free diagnostic to anyone interested so if you have something worrying you- take him up on his offer and I’m sure you will be well supported.

Mario is easing nicely into his role of 2019 President and is working with Larry, Des and Co on all things Shed. He’s got some great ideas for his year so we are looking forward to hearing those in due course. We’ve got a few things coming up now- Excellence of Workmanship night, District Conference and a couple of social activities to get sorted shortly to keep us connected – we need to start thinking about the Ramble too (August will come upon us in no time). Our RYLA candidates start their camp this coming Saturday and are going to come and tell us all about it after – I spoke to Tahlia (one of the nominees) on Thursday and she happens to work at Project Booyah – so she was thrilled to hear that it was our Club that had sponsored their graduation outfits – it’s a small world isn’t it?

I'm looking forward to our Social breakfast on Wednesday- we have so many lovely venues to choose from and Espresso Bonsai is a great little spot- so see you there!

Best wishes

Stories
This Wednesday 30 Jan 19: social breakfast
This Wednesday 30th January, we'll have a social breakfast at Espresso Bonsai on Chevron Island - 66 Thomas Drive. See map  Plenty of parking on site, as well as on the street.  See you there at 07:00 am!

Last Wednesday's Guest Speaker: David Lomman
"The healthier you are, the less you need drugs" says David Lomman, a formally qualified Naturopath and Hypnotherapist who spoke at our club last Wednesday.  Seems to be a plain obvious statement, isn't it? But, let's just compare your body for a moment with your car: Let's suppose your car is moving like a pregnant snail, it blows fumes and certainly isn't a shadow of its former self. You wouldn't simply ignore it, would you? You'd take it to the local garage and get them to give it an angry look.  So, by contrast, suppose your body feels sluggish, produces little energy considering all the fuel (food) you give it, blows excessive fumes and you have trouble sleeping... What? You are simply ignoring it? And what about if you have something more serious, such as Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, just to name a few: will the drugs you take actually fix the problem or just cover up the symptoms? And we haven't started talking about your brain yet. You see, your brain function relates directly to how well your body functions.

David's specialization, which he has practiced for some 30 years, is to fix your health with natural, drug free methods.  To start off, he'll analyse your bio chemistry via a Urine Saliva Analysis as well as go over your case history. The aim is to determine the root cause of why you feel the way you do. From that point onward, David will then guide you on a path of recovery. We don't have anywhere sufficient space to elaborate on his very proven methods, nor is there a need to: simply navigate to www.DavidLomman.com - his website is quite extensive and you will also find direct contact details there. It could be as straight forward as a lack of, or an imbalance of the basics: Water, Food, Minerals and Enzymes. Do we still have a bit of space to mention Hypnotherapy? David was, a long time ago, a patient himself and was successfully cured of his disability by this method. This motivated him to study this science formally himself. It can particularly be very helpful for "straight forward" stuff such as giving up smoking, but can be ground breaking when it comes to addressing Mental Health issues such as Anxiety and Depression.

David is happy to offer you a free strategy call if you have any particular health concerns or would like some advice on any health issue. Contact him on 0412 202 953 or email to david@DavidLomman.com .

Vocational Excellence Award - 20 Feb 2019
On 20th February 2019, we'll again hold an event to recognize Vocational Excellence (in the past, we called it Pride of Workmanship Award).

We often hear complaints about poor service, but the 'Quiet Achievers' out there remain unrecognized! Here is your opportunity! You may nominate any person whom you consider to have provided you with excellent service and/or has shown a high level of skill in their profession, trade or vocation and whom you consider worthy of recognition. The nomination form is in the Download Section on the right side.  Please send it directly to Richard Smith, our Chief of Vocational Service who is in charge of the organizing committee.  Details are shown on the form.

Are you coming to the Lismore District Conference?
OK, so it seems still to be a fair way off - two months away.  But accommodation will soon become hard to get - other people have already booked.  Your Editor and his better half will go down on Friday for the three days.

Why attend a District Conference?
  • Well, to start, it's fun: you meet lots of interesting people (the most interesting Rotarians DO attend the conference - not meaning to be bragging about myself of course)
  • You will hear Keynote Speakers for which you normally would pay hundreds of dollars to attend
  • The dinners are always superb fellowship events. The Saturday Night dinner is always very vibrant; this year they have a top notch Jazz & Swing band. Yes, we dance!
  • You learn a couple of things about Rotary which you may not have known before
Registration for Rotarians and their partners is free of charge, however, in fairness, a fee applies to partake in the events which serve food.  Click on this link to go to the Registration Page.

Snippets of last week's meeting 230119
Ian Mayberry was Chairman, Peter Morgan was at the door and Andy Bell was Sergeant.  We had apologies from Gerald East, Al Sirovs and Adrian Crowe.

President Jo Winwood welcomed all members and visitors: Honorary Member George Keily and our recent RYTS (Rotary Youth Transition Seminar) awardees Caleb Mercer and Jasper Abel, together with their mums Lisa and Sam, (see picture right) as well as Poppy, Jasper's sister.  Jo provided us with a brief update on last Monday's Board Meeting, issues relating to the Project Shed renovations, the Defibrillator etc. We also have received a donation from the Australasian Order of Old Bastards (AOOB) for $1,500, as well as a donation of $2,000 from an anonymous source in support of our wheelchairs project.  Thank you! One of the many items on the list for the upcoming months is an enhancement of participation in the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program, aiming to get more schools to participate in this excellent day long course.

After our Guest Speaker David Lomman's presentation (see above), Simon Brook presented the RYTS awardees Caleb and Jason, who both expressed their thanks to the club for sponsoring them.  Our club has sponsored RYTS students for decades, to the tune of $590.00 each. As always, both the boys were very enthusiastic about what they got out of the seminar (have yet to have one who isn't!).  We are awaiting a brief outline from both Jason and Caleb to be published in the bulletin shortly.

Honorary Member George Keily provided an update on the fundraising efforts by Apple Marketing for our Wheelchairs Project: a total of $9,275 has been raised, and another donation of $1,000 and one of $100 were received from an anonymous source. And, as he has done for decades, George has again collected spectacles by the box full, including 15 boxes of brand new spectacles, which he forwarded via Col Laurenson to Donations in Kind (DIK).  DIK will ultimately ship them to various places where they find good use, such as Papua New Guinea, the Solomons etc.

Richard Smith elaborated on the upcoming Excellence in Workmanship Award night coming up on 20th February.  We have so far 8 nominees, which will make it a great night.  It is, as always, also a social night - please come along with your partners.  Details of the venues are being finalized very shortly.

Treasurer Mark Twyford advised that the Club Dues will be invoiced very shortly, and Paul Seymour will organize a working bee at the Project Shed to establish an Asset Register.

Finally, again running short of time, Sergeant Andy Bell came up with a novel general fine for everyone: Name the worst Christmas Present you received, or alternatively name the New Year's Resolution you have already broken...  Quite a number of interesting items surfaced: one of the girls received a Perfume Pack - from ALDI - which apparently was not her style... Richard Smith got a Clock Radio, but the dials are so dim, he can't read it... Larry Murray got a pencil which on the other side has an implement designed to remove the fluff from his belly button...

Duty Roster - note: subject to change.  Please check every week:

New duty: Fellowship.  What does it entail? Your job is to ensure that all members, in particular new members, visitors and guests, and in particular the Guest Speaker, are welcomed, are introduced to other members and are comfortable. If required, explain the usual procedures, e.g. when we have our meal, when the speaker is expected to be at the rostrum etc.

Inspirations - well, sort of... 300119
The text of the cartoon by Sean Leahy is a bit hard to read, so I'm repeating it here:

"When we land we need to enact a ritual which will deeply symbolise the spirit of this great country..."
"... Let's take the day off"

Q: What is the collective noun for a group of Tennis players?
A: A tantrum
