Gidday Surfers Sunrise Members and Associates, fellow Rotarians and friends,

Another really special meeting on Wednesday. For just one week, we abandoned our regular meeting place at the Surfers Paradise Surf Club and had super tasty bacon and egg rolls cooked by our resident superbly talented Angus Miller, assisted by PE Paul Seymour and IPP Doug Lipp.

Luckily Angus brought more bacon, eggs and rolls than he thought he might need as the turnout exceeded all expectations. A special thankyou to Lionel Molloy, one of our hard working Associates who turned up early to provide everyone with ample tea and coffee, a necessity to kick start any meeting.
It was pleasing to be able to welcome our newest Corporate Member, Kieser (Bundall Clinic), represented by Kane and Paige. I am hopeful this fine organisation will be formally inducted into the Rotary family at the next formal meeting.

During the week I received an email from Ms Shova Poudel who is the PE of the Rotary Club of Balaju, Nepal enquiring when we were next meeting as she is currently on the Gold Coast and would love to join us. In my reply to her I explained our meeting this week would not be formal but casual. I am really pleased that she has decided to come along anyway. Really looking forward to meeting her.

On a personal note, this has been a great week so far, my knee, that has been giving me heaps, has decided to get better and feels really good. And the Mighty Blues (Carlton) had their first win of the year[yeah, RAH-RAH! - they did pick on one of their own size... ☺ Ed.] and the Mighty Storm had a big win over the Warriors.

Don't forget 'drinks' on Thursday afternoon from about 4.30 at Benowa Tavern.

Till next week, remember 'nothing changes if nothing changes' and 'do as you fear most'.

This week's social meeting: we expect a special visitor
President Andy has received a message from the President of the Rotary Club of Balaju (Kathmandu, Nepal), Ms Shova Kumari Poudel, advising that she would like to visit our club this Wednesday, 16th April.

Even though this week we have just a social meeting, and thus our visitor won't be able to experience the full spectrum of a Surfers Sunrise breakfast meeting, come along and make Shova welcome! Usual place and time: Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club (downstairs bistro), from 07:00 am.

Foundation Committee meets to prepare for grants in 2025-26
The Foundation committee met 5th April 2025 to discuss and debate both District Grant and Global Grant applications for this incoming Rotary Year.

We are now in process with Fundraising Director Ross Augustine kindly collating a District Grant, due 31 May. With assistance from Wheelchair Trust Chairman Geoff Croad collating numbers and details and any of us with anything else needed to fill in any gaps. The focus of the District Grant is to order additional materials for manufacture of the wheelchairs - additional materials as the purchase/expenditure would need to be around July AFTER the district Grant is approved and provided, with our matching funds. BIG BIG thanks to Ross and Geoff.

Global grant application  - as it stands, consideration of applying for a Global grant is on pause as we deliberate short term, medium term and long term considerations for both the Shed and Club member/volunteer involvement. We can apply for a Global Grant anytime of the calendar if we decide to go ahead.

The Foundation committee will meet again in a couple of months to discuss both
  1. viability of applying for a global grant, how best and whether we go ahead, and,
  2. consider and discuss in earnest a LOCAL project/service that we also utilise the shed for, as we moderate the degree of work on the wheelchairs.
Earnest consideration of number two is necessary in light of particular matters raised. Such as,
  1. longevity of manpower required for wheelchair manufacture as it’s becoming an issue,
  2. considering a LOCAL project the shed can be effectively used for in parallel to wheelchair manufacture/delivery, and
  3. effective use of the shed that brings good light to renewing the lease when it comes up in 2028. That is, minimise the risk of losing the shed space if the Club wants to keep hold of it. A local project will make it even more attractive for the lease to be renewed for the Club.
Elizabeth Celi, Foundation Director.

Special meeting last week at the project shed
Last Wednesday we enjoyed meeting with with our volunteers at our wheelchair project shed in Arundel. No formalities, just President Andy's rousing address from the pulpit to the troops.... đŸ˜€ And we welcomed our guests (and soon to be members) Kane Chisholm and Paige Lovett from Kieser Australia!  Special thanks go to Angus 'Onion King' Miller for preparing, cooking and dishing up a stack of delicious Egg & Bacon rolls and to our Associate Member Lionel Molloy, who brewed several jugs of filter coffee! Great meeting.  More pictures on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/rcsurferssunrise/
