Dear fellow members and friends of Surfers Sunrise,
I'm not sure which is longer, a minute in the microwave or a minute on the tread mill... But I am sure at the other end of the scale that time flies when you're having fun! And the fun continues this Wednesday with breakfast at the shed. As they say, more hands make for lighter work and that's what we are doing with each member tackling a simple task... it should be a breeze, and a tonne of fun, as long as I'm not cooking!
Speaking of fun, remember how much fun we had when we hosted our Pennsylvanian GSE team? Well now is you chance to be on an exchange yourself... yep, an exchange for Rotarians! District 9790 in Victoria are looking at a friendship exchange next year and seeking applicants for our own District 9640. What a great opportunity to forge a new friendship with our southern partners in crime! You know where you go for details! Until next week, be good!
For those of us who have lived on the Gold Coast for a while, or even have grown up here, Darrell's presentation evoked many nostalgic memories. With a 40 year history of designing High-Rise buildings in this city, he can indeed proudly use the title "My Gold Coast" for his speech: Starting with The Anchorage in 1970 through a list of landmark buildings. HiHo, Pacific Plaza, "The Mara's" (there are three of them), Gemini Court...
Darrell channeled Sir Clem Renouf, Past RI President (1978-79) who said: “Rotary gives ordinary people, extraordinary opportunities to do more with their lives than they ever dreamed possible.” (Sir Clem was the principal instigator of the Polio eradication campaign, and again re-kicked it into action in 2010. Click here to see an ABC 7:30 report: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=scTIoeepZFg.) Too right! Darrell was selected in the 1972 GSE Team to Pennsylvania (yes - where the recent team came from). And he never looked back. Immediately upon his return he joined Rotary, where he met up with his future business partner, Ron Burling, to found the now world famous Burling Brown & Co Architects.
Silver Point, Contessa, Spinnaker, Rivage Royal, Belle Maison... and so the list (and evolution of design) goes on. Not just High-Rise, but also schools (TSS, St Hilda's, All Saints, St Andrews). They include Resorts such as Greenmount Beach Resort. Then came a quite different challenge: the Theme Parks, starting with Seaworld.
And just to prove that the Gold Coast isn't the only town: Quite some time ago, Darrell was commissioned to design buildings in Darwin. Lots of them, to the extent that he has now become a regular commuter between the two cities.
"Architectural design today has changed" Darrell remarked somewhat wistfully. Look at Q1, Soul and Surfers Paradise Jewel (see photo on right), a $1 Billion project, financed by a Chinese company. You are not wrong, Darrell! But, as Greek Philosopher Heraclitus (535 - 475 BC) said about 2,500 years ago: "The only thing that is constant is change".

President Paul Seymour welcomed members, as well as our regulars (and hopefully soon to be inducted) visitors Richard Smith (RC of Toowoomba Garden City) and Al Sirovs, both expected to be inducted to our club very shortly. He reminded both current and incoming board members of the upcoming board meeting on 14th June. All bookings for the Changeover luncheon are to be made online - see separate article further on.
On behalf of Daryl Sanderson, Des La Rance kept us up to date on the latest happenings at "The Shed": 204 wheelchairs are loaded into a container destined for Sri Lanka, whilst another container is about to be loaded. A 40' container containing 3000 wheels will arrive, and help is required at The Shed to unload it, effectively moving it to another container for storage. In reference to the Flat Pack Schools: Tursa Employment has committed and deposited $2,502 to build the trusses, including paying for the materials. Thank you! Another similar project is expected. Helensvale High School has so far raised $16,000 for their Samoa School. They are aiming for a total of $50,000 - another major fundraiser is expected there shortly. The Board will decide to which school the Tursa donation will be applied.
Treasurer Mitch Brown again reminded members to look for the Invoice for membership dues in their Inbox. The discount will only apply if the money is in the Rotary bank account no later than 17th June 2016. Contact Mitch if you have not received your email.
District Treasurer Doug Lipp advised of the District's Changeover Luncheon to be held on Sunday 3rd July. It will be held at the Southport Golf Club. If you would like to attend, there is an online booking: www.trybooking.com/203689
Poor ol' Tony Bird: Not only is he willingly standing in at the door for Mario Fairlie, he also sets out the flags... the wrong way! "...and a multitude of other sins" according to the Sergeant... Mario Fairlie, however, reported his status as "100%"... Mitch Brown, such a sad looking man - when he has no money! Franz Huber, you may have retired from active business life, but that doesn't mean you can lower your dress standard so dramatically! Doug Lipp bought himself a new pair of shoes - very flash! Darrell Brown on the other hand is dressed in rather dull fashion today... Paul Seymour: Would you like to tell us what South Effrika is trying to do? So far 1:0 against Australia, and all out for 100 [Hmmm... Google tells a different story: SA won last Wednesday, so perhaps Paul might want to risk a cross fine this Wednesday? Ed.]Jo Gorman, you must have had a very easy time going through Uni, certainly appears you never worked as a part time waitress... Any Blues supporters of last week's State of Origin game? And just in case, anyone prepared to put a bet on the next match?

Remember in September 2014, one of my personal friends, Joy Ord (she is the Gold Coast Region chief as well as International Manager of Girl Guides Queensland) gave us a presentation of one of her projects, "drown - proofing" young kids in Cambodia. She had conducted this type of project before, with great success. Yes! A very large percentage of kids in that country cannot swim, yet they face serious dangers since there is certainly no pool fencing around the numerous ponds that exist everywhere. Surfers Sunrise provided Joy with $500 to conduct another one of these projects. , who has carried out this type of projects before, had planned to conduct another swimming school in February this year, but it had to be cancelled due to ... cold weather! [Hmmm... perhaps that's why they changed the terminology from 'Global Warming' to 'Climate Change'... Ed.]. It is now planned for August this year. A positive aspect: Because our donation was changed to $US, she got $US 451.00, not the $370.00 she would get today (and heavens knows what it would be in August!).
