Gidday members, associate members and friends of Surfers Sunrise Rotary,
I think this is my final report for our club bulletin, so, to all our readers: Thank you all!
It was a casual meeting this week and again we had an exceptional turn up. lots of discussions surrounding the manufacture of our wheelchairs and shipping of them to various locations around the world. A couple of new and, what I believe, exciting local community projects were also discussed. It’s too early for me to share these with you as some of the finer points need to be finalised. Suffice to say they are exciting.
Our Associates at the Project Shed, under the leadership of Geoff Croad, held a major ‘bike sale’ on Saturday morning. I don’t have the final figures at this time but I am assured we made some good money, which will go towards our Projects. Well done to all.
Preparations for our ‘Changeover’ next Sunday are well and truly underway. I can guarantee that those of you who are going will be impressed with the venue. Robby and I have been to the restaurant, which is part of the complex, and loved it.
Drinks on Thursday night at Benowa Tavern are beginning to be a must-attend. This Thursday, I had a meeting with our legendary Director of Fundraising, followed by a meeting with PE Paul Seymour. I must say I am very impressed by his level of enthusiasm.
Looking forward to the Changeover Luncheon this coming Sunday.
Remember - Do as you fear most and nothing changes if nothing changes.
Yes, this coming Wednesday 2nd July will also be a social meeting - first formal meeting will be next week, on 9th July. Come along for a cuppa and/or breakfast - downstairs at the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club bistro. Lots of good banter and laughter, and - believe it - sometimes there are more club related matters discussed and solutions determined than on a formal meeting!
... and they rolled up... and no wonder: there are some superb bikes there for as low as $20.00, right up to a $5,000 bike going for a measly $700.00. And this young man knew exactly what bike he wanted his dad to buy for him, and he got it! Our member Neil Thurlow, himself an accomplished cyclist, was on the ground to help people chose and to make sure they knew how to operate the machinery. Did the $5,000 bike, going for $700, get sold? I don't know - ask Wheelchair Trust Chair Geoff Croad! More photos on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/rcsurferssunrise
Bookings close Monday, 30th June at 4 pm, so if you haven't booked, you need to do it... yes, right now.
Our annual Changeover Luncheon is one of our major events of the year, where the previous Rotary year's President, Andy Bell, will hand over the President's collar to incoming President Paul Seymour and awards are handed out. Graeme Isaacson organised the venue for this year's event: it be held at the TRYP by Windham Hotel in Southport. He has wrangled a special deal, which includes a two-course (Main Course and Dessert) and welcome drinks on arrival. And, in a time when prices seem to go through the roof, the price is lower than last year's event!
... and we received an official mention by the (then) incoming Rotary International President, Ravi Ravindran, a member of the Rotary Club of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Daryl Sanderson, who was at the time the Chairman of the Wheelchair Trust, received the following email. Here is an extract from the club bulletin of 3rd June 2015:
"The Rotary Club of Colombo Metropolitan and the children of Sri Lanka are most grateful to you and your club for this kind gesture. They will communicate with you directly once the container is cleared." It is simply fitting that when the Container of Wheelchairs reach Sri Lanka on 1st July , Sri Lankan Rotarian Ravi Ravindran takes over as Rotary International President on the same day. We should call this project, “To RI President Ravi, with Love from Surfers Sunrise, Australia."
Duty Roster - note: subject to change - please check every week. Note: Fellowship duty also is expected to be at the Project Shed on the Saturday following the meeting
It's been months since I ordered the book, How To Scam People Online. It still hasn't arrived yet.
We are the product of 4.5 billion years of fortuitous, slow biological evolution. There is no reason to think that the evolutionary process has stopped. Man is a transitional animal. He is not the climax of creation. Carl Sagan, American Author and Science Communicator, 1934 - 1996
