Dear fellow members and friends of Surfers Sunrise,
I'm not sure which is longer, a minute in the microwave or a minute on the tread mill... But I am sure at the other end of the scale that time flies when you're having fun! And the fun continues this Wednesday with breakfast at the shed. As they say, more hands make for lighter work and that's what we are doing with each member tackling a simple task... it should be a breeze, and a tonne of fun, as long as I'm not cooking!
Speaking of fun, remember how much fun we had when we hosted our Pennsylvanian GSE team? Well now is you chance to be on an exchange yourself... yep, an exchange for Rotarians! District 9790 in Victoria are looking at a friendship exchange next year and seeking applicants for our own District 9640. What a great opportunity to forge a new friendship with our southern partners in crime! You know where you go for details! Until next week, be good!
... the man obviously believes in fast track careers: At the tender young age of 33, Simon is Managing Director of one of the foremost Architectural firms in Queensland, Burling Brown & Partners (refer last week's summary of its former Managing Partner, DGN Darrell Brown). On the Rotary side, Simon was selected to be on the Group Study Exchange (GSE) team to Wisconsin, USA. In 2014, he joined Surfers Sunrise as its youngest member, and in 2016/17, he will be President of the club.
"Rotary means to me:
Personal Development
Business Development and Ethics
Friendship, Fellowship
Making a difference.
Why am I telling you that?" he asks. "Because I want everyone to focus on it!"
Simon explained that, in 2010, when he had his first experience at the Surfers Sunrise Club, he had a "Rotary Moment", when he saw a picture of a young orphaned child who benefited from the school that our club organized to be delivered and built in the tsunami devastated region of Khao Lak Beach in Thailand.
So, what's coming up in the next 12 months? Well, Simon's list is deliberately designed to be a bit ambitious, yet are quite achievable. You find a specifically designed flyer he designed on our download section of our website (on the right hand side). There is something in there for everyone, including a possible expansion to a 'Surfers Sunset' segment for Friends of Surfers Sunrise.
And, very important: "Our" District Governor for 2017/18 will need lots of support. Simon's request is quite simple: "Every member to contribute and participate in the preparation and running of the District Conference 2018".
"Have your own Rotary Moment" is Simon's advice: "Be a mentor. And, in accordance of the Rotary International Theme for 2016/17: Serve Humanity".
This is just about your last chance - you must book now.
A must attend event - of course with your partners and bring along any friends and family!
Sunday 26th June 2016
12:00 noon for 12:30 start
Same place as last year, at the Seaworld Resort, organized by our resident "man in the middle" Chris Thurtell. See more details in the Events list on the left side.
Simon Brook: extraordinarily well dressed: fancy, the shirt collar matches the jacket. Now, did you get the shirt first and then went to look for a matching jacket? (yes, he did, he said...) Mitch Brown - now... is that "Haircut - Part One"? And have a look at Gerald East's fancy shoes! (sorry, he wont' be able to see them himself...) Fred Hamblen, welcome back! Bob Harrison, you'll really fit in with the Channel 10 show 'Totally Wild' filmed at The Shed! Jo Gorman for something or other... Franz Huber reportedly "cleared $24 Million on the sale of his business" [actually, that barely covered the deposit... Ed. ☺]Terry O'Shea, your face looks like Thunder. Richmond? [No - they actually had won their match]... Al Sirovs and Richard Smith, still masquerading as visitors... Visitor Renee Dillon apparently "just came as an afterthought"... Paul Seymour, I'll pay your fine for you [pure altruism - nothing to do with South Africa's Cricket prowess!] And there is a game coming up next Wednesday. Anyone openly owning up to supporting the Blues? Yes, Tania Laird and Des La Rance are! And Darrell Brown's RSL membership number came up last Tuesday at the draw, but he had already left, so no prize!
This has been in the making for almost two years, but finally has come to fruition: The inaugural Keith Lutz Award will be presented at this coming Wednesday's meeting at Surfers Paradise RSL Club. Keith Lutz. a Charter Member of our club was also a high profile member of the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club. The award has been created in his honour and will be presented by Jan Lutz to an outstanding young person from the Surf Life Saving movement, Jessica Webber - see photo on left.

Another one with the compliments of Gerald East (slightly modified to avoid prosecution under Section 18C...)
The mother-in-law arrives home from shopping to find her son-in-law Paddy in a steaming rage and hurriedly packing his suitcase. "What happened Paddy?" she asks anxiously.
"What happened? I'll tell you what happened. I sent an E-mail to my wife (your daughter) telling her I was coming home today from my fishing trip. I get home... and guess what I found? Yes, your daughter, my wife Patricia, naked with Joe Murphy in our marital bed! This is unforgivable, the end of our marriage. I'm done. I’m leaving forever".
“Ah now, calm down Paddy, calm down” says the mother-in law "There is something very odd going on here. My daughter would never do such a thing! There must be a simple explanation. I’ll go speak to her immediately and find out what’s happened.”
Moments later, the mother-in-law comes back with a big smile. “Paddy, I told you there must be a simple explanation… she never got your email.”
