Welcome all,

Simon's presentation last week outlined ideas (and blocks) to attracting young people to Rotary. Still, the whole idea to "sharing Rotary" is the age old concept: Ask, and thou shalt receive! Can you recall the day you were asked to join Rotary? You may not have known much about our organization. On the other hand, you may have felt tickled pink to be asked. Either way, you joined! Simon's points [see separate article below. Ed.] are indeed very valid, perhaps not just for young people, but also for older people who have remained young and prefer to remain unregimented. Still, prospective members don't have to conform to a specific age group. But you need to ask.

Most of you are, or prior to retirement have been successful business people. Did you ever gain a new client without promoting the benefits of being a client of your organization? Similarly with prospective members of Rotary. You know all about Rotary, its many outstanding programs from fostering Youth to eradicating Polio (expected to be in 2016/17, by the way). So, think about it: To whom can you bestow the gift of membership in Rotary? Don't tell me you don't know anyone outside Rotary! Ask. And ask again.

On a more relaxed note: We have a tentative date of the 4^th May for Hope Island Rotary to come to Surfers Sunrise for a return visit. Last year's visit to them was very enjoyable indeed - let's return their hospitality in style!

Doug Lipp (for Tania Laird) was at the door, Neil Thurlow (for Graeme Isaacson) was Chairman and Andy Bell (for himself) was Sergeant.

We had apologies from Tania Laird, Graeme Isaacson, Terry O'Shea and Jason Price.

The meeting started off by conducting the Annual General Meeting in near record time (see separate article about this).

President Paul Seymour greeted all members and visitors David Baguley (incoming District Governor Elect Nominee for 2018/19), Jo Gorman (guest of Andy Bell), Mark Twyford former President of RC of Parkwood, guest of Franz Huber) and our Guest Speaker, John Duthie, director of the ETC company.

Ray Higgs brought us up to date on the 'Lutzie' Award in honour of our late member Keith Lutz: Ray and Chris Thurtell had a meeting with Surfers Paradise Life Saving Club. The award, which will be open to 14 - 18 year olds, will be a special Surfboard, valued at some $1,700. It is also planned to provide an appropriate Award Certificate.

Youth Service Director Chris Thurtell reported on the previous weekend's Youth Exchange Camp: all Incoming, Outgoing and Rebound students met. Our Isabelle Franich (France 2014) was also in attendance. Chris also reported that Martina Missarelli's family will be over here in early January 2016 - see separate article about "inofficial" breakfast on 6th January at Domani's on Tedder Avenue, Main Beach.

Wheelchair Trust Chairman Daryl Sanderson had a meeting with an Employment Company about the School for Samoa project of Helensvale High School. It stands to reason that a grant of approx $10,000 will buy the materials (timber etc). Grafton Rotary Club will be saving old bikes for us, but the question is how to transport them? Beaudesert Special School also has bikes, however, in this instance, our old collaborators, the Palen Creek Correctional Centre, will pick them up as they bring their finished wheelchairs back... And Apple Marketing has already contributed some $5,000 from phone calls on their Christmas Appeal for wheelchairs. Well done, Apple Marketing!

Christmas presents for Anglicare: Ian Mayberry urges all members to provide a present, as we have traditionally done for decades, for Anglicare. Note, for 0 - 14 year olds, new and unwrapped.

DGN Darrell Brown reported on a recent review he conducted in his capacity as District Governor Nominee. Of interest: some 30 years ago, approx 40 people were involved. Now there are just 7, and only 14 clubs are prepared to host. Darrell acknowledged that our club's Youth Service Director, Chris Thurtell, will be incoming Youth Exchange Chairman at District level commencing 2016/17. Congratulations, Chris!

President Elect Simon Brook is looking for people who would like to host the inbound GSE Team from Pensylvannia: 11th to 15th May 2016. Contact Simon directly.

Secretary Peter Morgan is trying to find the Blood Pressure machine we "used to have". [Rumors that this has anything to do with the stress of being the chief legal officer of Suncorp are totally fabricated...] However, it would appear that it didn't work properly anyway, so we might as well write it off and perhaps get another one, if we really need one?

Last week's Guest Speaker: Martina Missarelli: My family, my country

"Aeee liva in a big 'ousa..." ah, I wish I could adequately describe the delightful Italian accent with which Martina presented her story! Martina hail from the picturesque town of Pian Camuno (Brescia, Lombardy), in the northern region of Italy. Her father is the local Volvo dealer, a Volvo dealer with an obvious passion: he has some 6 antique Volvo's in his garage... Martina's family includes her forementioned dad, her mum, a sister and a brother. And very important to mention: the family dog 'Neve'. (Neve is Italian for 'No').

And how come Martina was so named? Well, so the story goes, her parents really expected a boy (presumably he would have been named Martino). Well, there is no doubt that Martina very much belongs to the female of the species: just have a gander at the stunningly elegant young woman in the photo on the left, taken at the recent St Hilda's Prep Ball!

Sizzle - First time at Dan Murphy's

Tania Laird organized another Sausage Sizzle fundraiser last Saturday, this one was held at a new location at Dan Murphy's bottle shop at the Parkwood Pub. Whilst profits were nowhere near the vicinity of the one recently held at Bunnings, it still produced a respectable $213 net.

thank you to the members who helped on the day: Chris Thurtell, Martina Missarelli, Simon Brook, Angus Miller, Gerald East, Franz Huber, John and Julie Franich, Doug Lipp, Tony Bird and Geoff Croad. And of course Tania herself who not only organized it but "manned" (can one use this word if a lady does the work??). And a very special thanks must go to Angus Miller and Simon Brook, who picked the Bar-be-Que up from The Shed, and returned it again with the left over drinks at the end of the day.

As always, the happy smile of our customers is just one of the aspects that make it worthwhile...

Secretary Peter Morgan can't win: on one hand he has to distribute emails coming in from District etc to members, on the other hand he gets fined by the Sergeant for sending tons of emails... Darrell Brown, very sage looking today, even wearing matching socks, pants? (Yes, Darrell was going to the office, that's why!) Simon Brook arrives at Rotary by Skateboard. Any possibility to design a Tandem Skateboard or have a little trailer on it, so Darrell Brown can ride with you? And the Sergeant went to a function with Tania Laird, and she never mentioned Rotary even once! Daryl Sanderson, where is that newspaper article in the Finnish press? No, the Glen Innes Examiner is not an equal substitute! Angus Miller for something or other (sorry, they can be a quite rowdy and noisy mob, the Sunrise Rotarians... Ed.) Gerald East: a disgraceful attire: have a look at those naked legs... Ian Mayberry is off to Melbourne on the weekend - one expects lots of walking (yeah, right!) Terry O'Shea: last week we had a superbly co

oked breakfast at the shed. So, Graeme Isaacson, why wasn't Terry in the kitchen today?? The "Pope" was fined in absentia, allegedly having turned a single egg into 500 at last week's Shed breakfast... Mario Fairlie, you are looking sensational (which produced an immediate counter fine by Mario...) President Paul, there you were on duty last week to put the paraphernalia away. And you simply walked off! And finally, this Friday there will be an important event involving the 'Black Cats' [I understand this is some sort of a sporting team from New Zealand. It is not known whether they walked under a ladder. Ed] playing Australia. If you don't barrack for the Black Cats, put in!

This Wednesday, Youth Director Chris Thurtell will outline details of the discussions he and Ray Higgs had with David Orchard of the Southport/Main Beach SLSC in relation to the Keith Lutz Award, in memory of our Charter Member, Wheelchair driving force and Surf Life Saver extraordinaire.
