Greetings, fellow members, associate members and friends of Surfers Sunrise Rotary,
This last week has been a busy time for those on the Community Service team, where we had a very positive meeting with a prospective school with respect to School Mates and Youth Outreach with assisting in fundraising and School Mates program – more details to follow with both organisations later.
We have been advised by our corporate member Kane Chisholm, that this coming Saturday 14th March 2026, Kieser Bundall will have an open day. As we have done in the past, we are invited to run a sausage sizzle and where we can promote Surfers Sunrise Rotary. All proceeds will go to our club. Can you help? We need one more helper for the second shift 11:30 am - 1:30 pm. Please contact Ross Augustine directly: rosscoe1244@hotmail.com. Our member (and President Elect), Dr Elizabeth Celi is a psychologist, working with sufferers of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. Her presentation is titled 'Trauma, the brain, the psychology and keeping on top of our memories'. [Now, I know somebody who certainly could do with advice on "keeping on top of our memories". I see him in the mirror every time I shave... Ed.]
Here is a bit of history for you, in view that the Rotary International theme for March is WASH (yes, another acronym...) Water, Sanitation and Hygiene.
Back in 1907, two years after our inaugural Rotary International President, Paul Harris, founded this organisation, the first ever Community Service project was completed: a “comfort station”, aka Public Toilet, in Chicago. Now, if you have ever been caught in a major city, desperately looking for one, you know exactly what I mean about how important this is. Ever been to Paris? They are almost non-existent – you need to download an app to find one.
Rotary has always been big on this subject of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. Back in 1978/79, the first Australian to be appointed RI President, Sir Clem Renouf, started the “3H” program: Health, Hunger and Humanity. Water, of course, would have heavily weighed in this major international program. Clem’s biggest initiative was the eradication of Polio.
So, how can you get involved? After all, our local council takes good care of public conveniences on the Gold Coast. But in developing countries, it’s different. The Rotary Foundation has dozens of programs in places that need it. And you don’t have to worry whether your donation is well spent. Instead of a 'formal' meeting at our usual venue, on 8th April we'll meet on-site at Youth Outreach. This organisation specialises in helping homeless and unemployed young people to gain skills to gain future employment.
Arranged by Fundraising and Services Director Ross Augustine, together with Evan Mita (who is an Employment Engagement Officer with Mission Australia), we'll have an on-site Vocational Service meeting at their training facility.
