The ‘Surfers Sunrise Sizzle Team’ of Gus Miller, Geoff Croad, Adrian Crowe and Andy Bell did a great job at the Rotary Gold Coast Australia Day Celebration last Tuesday. Shed Volunteer Ben Loots also helped out and over $550 was raised for our projects. Well done all!

It was an honour to present 2 Certificates of Appreciation at the Shed on Saturday. The first was to Albert Raffone, the artist who did an amazing job painting the 10,000th Wheelchair – as I mentioned on Saturday the 10,000th Wheelchair is a great symbol of what the Wheelchair Trust and Surfers Sunrise has achieved but is also a great way to promote Rotary and the Wheelchair Trust at our various fundraising activities going forward. The second Certificate of Appreciation was to John Boucher in recognition of his many years of hard work and service at the Shed. It is volunteers like John that make the Wheelchair Project as successful as it is. Congratulations to both Albert and John.

Our first social event for the year will be a Chinese New Year Celebration at Highland Court Benowa (same place as last year) on Wednesday 17th February. Banquet Menu to follow shortly - the Trybooking Event has been set up - see story below and Events section.

This Wednesday morning we have Briana Dorrough presenting on her recent experiences at the National Youth Science Forum in Canberra – Surfers Sunrise sponsored Briana to attend the forum. See you at the Surf Club from 7am.

Kind regards,

Charles Thomasson

Stories
This coming Wednesday 3rd Feb: Briana Dorrough
Our club sponsored Briana Dorrough to attend the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) course in Canberra - she has just returned.  The NYSF is a heavily contested with far more candidates applying than can be accepted. It is a 10 day course designed to give students with high STEM capabilities a broad understanding of their career choices.
Very special event last Saturday at the Shed
Very special event last Saturday morning at the Project Shed: President Charles Thomasson, Project Shed Chief Larry Murray and Des La Rance OAM (he designed the original concept of the Rough Terrain Wheelchair) presented Certificates of Appreciation to two highly deserving recipients. John Boucher (left image) has volunteered at the shed for years and years. Right image is with Albert Raffone, the artist who painted our "official" 10,000th Wheelchair. Congratulations! Photos by Al Sirovs.
Queuing up at the Australia Day Sizzle
They were queing up at the Botanical Gardens for a chance to get hold of a sizzling sausage cooked by the Surfers Sunrise Sizzle Team at the Australia Day event ! We were invited by David Baguley (RC of Gold Coast) who, with his better half Rana, organised the stand of the Friends of the Gold Coast Botanical Gardens. Thank you, David and Rana for offering this fundraising opportunity, and a big thank you to the sizzlers Adrian Crowe, "Onion King" Gus Miller, Geoff Croad and Andy Bell, as well as Shed Volunteer Ben Loots. Photo by David Baguley.  More photos on our Facebook page.
Social Dinner on Wednesday 17th Feb
Andy Bell and President Charles Thomasson have organized for our club to have a social dinner night, celebrating the Chinese New Year of the Ox (well, it will be close to it anyway... ☺)  It will be in the form of a sumptuous banquet, held on Wednesday 17th February 2021, from 6:00 pm at the

Highland Court Chinese Restaurant
Benowa Gardens Shopping Centre
203 Ashmore Rd,
Benowa QLD 4217

This year, we'll have the entire restaurant to ourselves! Howzat?? Same price as last year - $35.00 per head. BYO, wine only - no corkage! (wine only - all other drinks must be purchased at the venue). Of course, partners, friends and guests welcome!  Click here for online bookings or navigate to https://www.trybooking.com/BONHD Bookings close Sunday evening 14th February.

We need more bikes!
We need another load or two of unwanted bicycles (any condition) to re-purpose them into 'Rough Terrain' Wheelchairs. Over 10,000 of them have been made by our volunteers over the past 23 years. Do you have any, or know of anyone who has some?

We can collect (Gold Coast region only). Please MESSAGE us. Share this too, thank you!
