Gidday Surfers Sunrise Members, Associates and friends of Rotary,
Another week of thankfully ever reducing pain. Take it from me, avoid bruising, breaking or bashing your ribs in any way. Simple and common things like coughing, sneezing, laughing or even hiccups take on a life of their own and not in a good way.
We had a working bee at the project shed on Saturday and as usual the club members turned up to get the job done. As President I am eternally humbled by the commitment and endeavour of our members. I salute every one of them.
At the time of this bulletin being published, our annual Golf Day has just concluded. The weather gods were good to us, not too hot and the rain stayed away till just the last few strokes. Congratulations to the winners! [See photo below - full report and photo album in next week's bulletin. Ed.]
It is very pleasing to see an increased attendance at our meetings over the past few weeks. Fingers crossed the trend continues..
Think on this …. ‘Nothing changes if nothing changes’. Do as you fear most
Kal Glanznig is an award winning youth ocean and climate champion. Creator of the documentary Rising Up, whilst in high-school he arranged a $100,000, 100kW solar panel system, then supported over 20 schools to follow suit. In 2019 he co-founded Plastic Free Cronulla, building a community movement that has helped achieve a legislative ban of single-use plastics.
Kal was awarded Sutherland Shire Young Australian of the Year 2020 and Environmental Citizen of the Year 2023, he was part of the Youth Advisory Council for World Oceans Day and in 2022 and 2023 attended the United Nations Climate Change COP. A passionate aquatic athlete, Kal has represented Australia in water polo at the Youth World Championships. His work has been featured in the ABC, Daily Telegraph and Channel 10.
Leading into the meeting, our National Youth Science Forum awardee, Chloe Chan, will briefly introduce herself.
This year's Surfers Sunrise Golf Day has just concluded. With well over 90 players, a record (and, I dare say, most likely also a record fundraising effort). Photo is of the winning Corporate Team: Astill Cronin Lawyers. Golf Day organiserCharles Thomasson (second from left) introduces Glenn Screech, Ashley Cronin, Glenn O'Kearney and Ethan Ahrens. The same team also won the overall competition. Photo Album is now uploaded - see segment on the right. Full report in next week's bulletin.
Paul Seymour, who recently attended a Rotary Friendship Exchange Team to Pennsylvania, brought some members of another RFE team from Scotland to our project shed. Very obviously impressed by our setup, all of them donated handsomely, each "buying" a wheelchair (and then some!). Thank you very much, Sheena, Fraser and John! We really appreciate your donations.

Had a good working bee at our project shed this morning, stripping off wheels from old bikes, and stacking the iron frames into a big 10 m3 skippy bin for recycling, and the aluminium frames aside to remove any iron bits before sending them for aluminium recycling. Picture: Neil Thurlow (left) and Bryan Tuesley, in front of the pile of wheels. Should have taken a "before" picture, but forgot. BTW: Good to see you back on your feet after complex surgery on your leg, Neil!
Yes, only 7 weeks to go! Graeme Isaacson and Adrian Crowe are organising this year's Christmas Breakfast. The date decided on is Wednesday, 18th December. Watch this space for updates.
We have been advised by the Arundel Community Centre that, from Wednesday 13th November 2024, the Centre will be rented to the Arundel Probus Club, meeting monthly every 2nd Wednesday, from 09:00 am to 1:00 pm. On those days, parking will be limited at the shed, and our volunteers are encouraged to park in the near vicinity of the shed, rather than along the entire length of the driveway near the centre.
Duty Roster - note: subject to change - please check every week. Note: Fellowship duty also is expected to be at the Project Shed on the Saturday following the meeting
