Chris Thurtell was at the door with freshly arrived Youth Exchange Student Martina as his assistant, Neil Thurlow was Chairman and Ian Mayberry was Sergeant on behalf of Andy Bell.
We had apologies from Fred Hamblen, Daryl Sanderson, Paul Seymour, Larry Murray, Andy Bell, Tania Laird and Conrad Martens.
President Elect Simon Brook welcomed all members and in particular our Youth Exchange Student Martina Missarelli, Honorary Member George Keily and special guests Sarah Cooper (Felicity's mum), our rebound studend from France Isabelle Franich and her friend Hayley Winchcombe. Hayley, who lives in Perth, also was a YE Student in France with Isabelle. Simon reminded all that our meeting of 29th July [that is this week, folks!] will be a social affair at the Paradox Cafe in Surfers Paradise (it is at the Transit Centre near the Bruce Bishop Car Park). Members will purchase their own breakfast a la carte and make a donation of $5.00 to the club. Simon also re-iterated that members are requested to look out for candidates to the upcoming GSE Team selection for Pennsylvania: Nominations are being sought for both team members as well as for a team leader. Conversely, our club may want to be involved in hosting the incoming team? More details can be found on our District Website: http://rotary9640.org/SitePage/group-study-exchange.  Chris Thurtell then formally introduced Martina Missarelli in interview style (picture left: Sarah Cooper, Chris Thurtell, Martina Missarelli, Isabelle Franich and her friend Hayley Winchcombe from Perth). Martina has the most delightfulla Italian accentta - if you weren't there, you definitely missed something. As outlined in last week's bulletin, Martina comes from the town of Pian Camuno in Northern Italy. She has enrolled at St Hilda's Girls High School where she starts on 27th July.
Martina, currently just 17 years old, gave us a brief introduction to her family, her school live in Italy (they go to school 6 days a week), her sports and hobbies (Tennis, Music). She sees her future in a double degree of economics and law. And travel: to the US, Canada... Her first impressions of Australia? "Love it!!" No doubt, there will be a more substantial presentation coming up in the foreseeable future!
Doug Lipp advised that the Crazy Whist game will now be held a week laster on Saturday 8th August, to avoid a clash with the Suns Horizon event on the 1st August and a clash of bookings at the hall. See Events section on the Website and download file. You don't need to know how to play - instructions will be provided on the evening! More details on location etc in next week's bulletin. Just mark your calendar!
Gerald East is organizing the Suns Horizon raffle ticket selling team for Saturday 1st August. Be at the Gate at 5:10 pm for game start at 7:20 pm.
Honorary Member George Keily announced that Apple Marketing had raised $6,050.00 for our Wheelchair Project, which brings it to a total of $14,850 for the last 12 months. A big Thank You to the team at Apple Marketing! George also has been hyperactive himself: he's collected about 4 Kg of Stamps from Apple Marketing, and has collected some 500 pairs of spectacles from various Optometrists to be forwarded to Donations in Kind for re-deployment in developing countries. Well done George! George also put forward a recommendation for a supplier of Pool Fencing: Peter Hayes, a member of the Broadwater Southport Rotary Club (for which he promptly got fined by the Sergeant later on - there is no free advertising...)

.JPG) Youth Director Chris Thurtell outlined his vision for the next 12 months. This year, whilst we are hosting an incoming YE student, we are not going to send one out in January since we currently have two (Gabrielle and Felicity) overseas. Our main focus will be on the other Youth Programs, in particular the "5 big ones": RYPEN (Rotary Youth Program for Enrichment), RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award), RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness), NYSF (the National Youth Science Forum) and of course Youth Exchange with our students currently stationed overseas and freshly arrived Martina from Italy. "Our challenge is to find a candidate selected by us", Chris emphasised. This is in reference to the fact that in past years it was quite common that we would "inherit" a (nevertheless very worthy) candiate proposed by another club.
This is a weekend experience for 14 - 16 year old students, designed to assist them in their transition to adulthood. The emphasis is on quality, safety, outcomes, communication, decision making. Applicants don't necessarily have to be top academic achievers Click on the link above for more details, in particular read the ' About RYPEN' page.
RYLA is, as the name would suggest, a camp to develop leaders. Designed for 19 - 28 year olds, it features numerous segments on personal development, leadership skills, citizenship skills, how to handle change. Originally conceived in Australia in 1959, it was adopted world wide in 1971 and by 1998 is running in some 521 Districts. More details on the above link.
Now, this is for the seriously brainy! You may recall we were fortunate to have Maria Ciubuc-Batcu (picture on right) accepted in 2013. Annually held in Canberra, this is a serious (but with lots of fun) 2 week excercise for aspiring scientists.
Just how many lives has RYDA saved over the years? Nobody would know. But there would be almost nobody who has not, at some stage in their lives, been touched by the tragedy of a young man or woman suffering total disability or even death due to misjudging their driving ability, or worse, due to their mate's driving ability. The loss is not just for the individual, but their families and friends are forever affected. Our club, with the driving force of DGN Darrell Brown behind it, has a long standing involvement in this very important program.
Travel, Adventure, Opportunity... The leading program of its kind in the world. Our club was dormant for many years, until we revived this program again with great success. Over the past few years, we had a strong involvement, culminating with our recent students Isabelle Franich (to France) and currently two students, Felicity Cooper (in Finland) and Gabrielle Burey (in Germany), and of course the very successful inbound students we have recently hosted: Lyssia Delameneure (Belgium) in 2013-14, Laura Burtscher (Austria) in 2014-15 and now, just arrived, Martina Missarelli (Italy).
So, how will we go about it? "Schools are getting so many enquiries for participants in Youth programs" Chris said, "we will take alternative venues such as Sport and Surf Clubs". Our motto:
"Find your place in the world".

 Ray Higgs was last in the door (although he vehemently denied it, but there's no use arguing with the Sergeant, Ray!)... Graeme Isaacson, did you get dressed in the dark? Not a single item of you apparel matches the colour of your hair! Darrell Brown, we appreciate that, whilst it would economically be cheaper to help selling raffle tickets at the Suns Horizon, the wedding of your daughter is more important... Doug Lipp, Accountant extraordinaire, District Treasurer, but had trouble balancing the takings at the door last week... Lawyer Mitch Brown: simply because I can... Simon Brook, are you trying to steal my job? Peter Morgan, anyone ever introduced you to e-mail protocols? Geoff Croad needs a holiday after the holiday in Fiji... George Keily, there is no such thing as a free ad, not even for a fellow Rotarian... Mario Fairlie had a cross-fine: he discovered that Julian Price's badge had "Mr" in front of his name. "Why don't I have 'Mr' written in front of my name? And last, but not least: we all sang "Haaaaapy Birthday toooo yooooou!!" to Terry O'Shea! |

This Wednesday's breakfast is at the newest, coolest cafe in town... Paradox Roasters in the Surfers Paradise Transit Centre... otherwise known as 4217.
Everyone is welcome! It's going to be casual and social at a whole new level! (yes, you will still need to wear your pants!)
Car parking in Bruce Bishop (you get a 2hr free ticket from the cafe) or better still, catch the tram, ride a bike, run or even roll... whatever gets you there!
$5 entry fee includes a raffle ticket... (this weeks prize is a goodie!) any food or drinks is order and pay at the counter... yep its that easy!
Cafe opens at 7am, and while we suggest 7am arrival... who cares when you get there... as long as you can make it!

Our member and District Treasurer Doug Lipp (he is a race horse owner himself), in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Surfers Paradise, is organizing a Race Day at the Gold Coast Turf Club in October. Further, the day is sponsored by our Sergeant Andy Bell's company Eximm too. Tickets are just $70.00 per head, which includes a sumptuous buffet luncheon as well as afternoon tea and coffee. Tables of 10 are available, so why not invite some friends or clients?
