For those that did not attend from our Club: the principal purpose of the joint meeting was to make a presentation to members of both Clubs regarding the 2018 District Conference 9640, in support of our incoming District Governor, Darrell Brown. The format of the meeting was essentially set to allow key District Committee Volunteers to give an overview of the conference and where the Committee is at present. Surfers Sunrise had eighteen members and two guests in attendance.
As an aside, Gold Coast requested all members to wear a hat to support Mental Health. All funds raised from the meeting would go towards this worthy cause.
Gold Coast President Kate Kimmorley welcomed the members and guests from Surfers Sunrise and introduced our President Simon Brook. Gold Coast Club business, was called for and dealt with rather quickly to ensure time was available for the 2018 District PowerPoint presentation. Interestingly, whilst normal club business and fellowship is being conducted, Gold Coast have a general presentation running on the screen, showcasing upcoming events and recent news, put together by Phil Rosenberg. This is a great idea, especially for visiting guests.
Gold Coast member Mark Urquhart, gave the International Toast, with a little history on the Rotary Club of Kuala Lumpur. We are now a little more educated in the world of Rotary.
David Baguely presented a quick update on the progress and requirements for the upcoming trial for the Gold Coast Ramble, including access to the app, and it could be seen that many members were reaching for their mobile devices to download.
So down to business, with Kate introducing our own Jo Gorman, the 2018 District Chairperson. Jo began the presentation by giving an overview of the committee and introduced the various committee directors. You can download the organization chart from the Download Section on the right.
Members and guests were taken through the presentation by:
- Doug Lipp - Treasurer: Laying out the expected income and costs associated with such an event
- Kate Kimmorley - Sponsorship and how it will impact the success of the conference
- Phil Rosenberg - Marketing, the man who put the presentation together, which can be found at this link FUN IN ROTARY
- Ray Higgs (standing in for Catherine) - Program Overview, it was noted from some in the audience that Ray perhaps should not be put in charge of a microphone, it is hard to get it back ☺.
Sitting back and actually listening to this presentation and looking around at the members, it was evident to all were excited, impressed and ready to make this the best district conference ever.
In between all this, we had drinks, meal and fellowship. A Gold Coast Member, returning from a recent trip overseas, donated a mystery gift to auction to members, to assist in fundraising for the evening. Our own Mario Farlie, after multiple bids and much encouragement, won the bid. I will keep you guessing as to what the gift was.
Our Sergeant, Andy Bell, was given the task of fining members of both clubs, at task he handled with much ease. Funds were extracted from members at a frightening rate and on multiple fines, including those that did not have a hat on. The Sergeant was a little stumped on a thing called “Cross Fines”, perhaps they will be introduced at Surfers Sunrise in the near future.
Gold Coast also have a little fundraiser with an ongoing card game, where if you win the raffle you have a chance to draw from a pack of cards, pick the Joker and you win the kitty. Last winner of the kitty at approximately $800.00 was immediately donated back to the Rotary Foundation.
A great night was had by all, with Kate suggesting that perhaps we should do more of this in the future.
Our Jo Gorman is not your average Program Chief... For this Wednesday, she has organized David Zolkwer. He is Executive Vice President and Director of Public Events of major international events organizing company Jack Morton. Among many other major world class events, David was Head of Ceremonies and Artistic Director of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. And no prizes for guessing who will organize the ceremonies for the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast....
