A big thank you to Brian Pearson, Uwe Seifert, Ray Drowley, Ann O’Connor, Nicole Bricknell, Franz Huber, Al Sirovs, Andy Bell, Mark Twyford, Darrell Brown, Angus Miller and Geoff Croad for their work at the Bunnings Sausage sizzle on Friday, 2 September.
Based on the average net return over the eight Bunnings’ BBQs the Club has conducted since August 2021, it was the most successful Friday BBQ fund raiser ever.
A special shout out to Geoff, Angus and Franz. These special blokes are the backbone of these fund raisers. Without their selfless sacrifices, the Club would have to pass on these fundraising opportunities.
They don’t just staff the tent for shifts but go the extra mile – they purchase the stock, cut the onions, take the stock and eskies to the site, set up the tent and BBQ, bump out once the day is over and then take everything back to the Shed and unload and pack away. While members might do a three hour shift, their day starts at dawn and doesn’t finish until dusk. They are truly unsung heroes and their efforts and devotion to the club are to be, and rightly should be, applauded by all members. [Wow! Thank you! But shouldn't there be something like the Presidential Medal of - well, can't think of a name - perhaps 'The Trowel (for laying it on thickly)? 😊 Ed.]
All members are encouraged to avail themselves of the opportunity to participate in these BBQ fund raisers. They are not a waste of time - needed monies are raised to support the Club’s philanthropic activities, they provide the opportunity for fellowship and to get to know other members better, and enable the Club and Rotary’s activities more generally to be promoted to the general public.
Participating and contributing is what Service Above Self is all about.

Congratulations toPieta Jackman who at this morning's meeting was presented with the Lutzy Award - including a flash new paddle board. The award is in memory of our Charter Member Keith Lutz who passed away in 2013. It is presented to a young emerging leader, selected by a committee of the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club. As David Orchy from the SLSC pointed out: the selection of Pieta was unanimous.
Jan Lutz, who this morning presented the award for the 7th time in honour of her late husband, said "They do a magnificent job in all areas and the vibe between them and our wonderful Surfers Paradise Surf Club just keeps going. I am very pleased to still be part of it, although today was more difficult due to the recent loss of Jason [their son - Ed.]. So maybe I can be excused for not ramping up on the speech. Good luck Rotarians, with all your future dealings."

In two weeks' time, on 14th September, DGN Lisa Hunt will visit our club to talk about the proposed Regionalisation Pilot program for Zone 8. This zone includes Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific islands. Our District 9640 has been chosen for a pilot program, aimed to determine whether the proposed new governance scheme is feasible, workable and indeed whether the expected benefits will materialise.
If adopted, this would involve major changes. In essence, the current Districts would be abolished and replaced with regions (approximately 2 - 3 per District).Hence all members should inform themselves before all clubs in the district are asked to vote, shortly after DGN Lisa’s presentation.

To learn more about the negative side, a PDF with two opinion pieces by PP Peter Truer (RC of Boonah) and PDG Jeff Egan (RC Mt Warning AM) has also been distributed to all members. It is important to note that both are stating their personal view, not the official view of the District. To save you finding it, I’ve uploaded it to the Download Section on the right.
Ray Higgs was Chairman, Kristen ‘KJ’ Jewson and Ashleigh Symes were at the door (for Paul Seymour). This was a special meeting; the presentation of the annual Lutzy Award (see separate article above).
We had apologies from Trent Belling, Nick Cole, Mario Fairlie, Tash Price, Paul Seymour, Adam Sheppard, Al Sirovs and Chris Thurtell. We also had an apology from Trevor Hendy, the President of the Surfers Paradise SLSC, who was represented by Scott Andrews.
President Mitch Brown opened the meeting with an acknowledgment of country, giving us a brief outline of how indigenous names were adapted for local villages, such as Mudgeeraba, without anyone asking what the name actually meant… 😊
Ray Higgs, who is our principal liaison with the SLSC, briefly outlined the history of the Lutzy Award and introduced the recipient, Pieta Jackman. She was accompanied by her mother Samantha Jackman, as well as a friend of the family, Harry Ellis. David Orchy and Scott Andrews represented the Surf Club.
Following the Lutzy Award presentation, David Orchy and Scott Jackman briefly addressed the meeting, outlining how important the development of young leaders is for the community and in particular for the Surf Life Saving movement.
Following the presentation, President Mitch briefly outlined some new, additional requirements (and massive expenses) the Gold Coast City Council has come up with to satisfy their requirements to renew our lease for the project shed.
On a much happier note: Mark Twyford announced that he had become a Grandfather! Congratulations!
