 It took a very special person to break the ice... Tania Laird is our very first Surfers Sunrise lady member. Hot on the heels of the induction of Julian Price last week, Vice President Ian Mayberry inducted Tania last Wednesday. Introduced to our club by Sergeant Andy Bell (yes, he fined her already, "just to get used to it"...) Tania is a Sales Executive with the Australian Security Industry Association.
Here she is pictured with Andy Bell, proudly affixing her shiny new Rotary Pin.
Welcome to the club, Tania!
Now, let's hope it doesn't take another 28 years before the next lady is inducted... ☺

Chris Thurtell was at the door with freshly arrived Youth Exchange Student Martina as his assistant, Neil Thurlow was Chairman and Ian Mayberry was Sergeant on behalf of Andy Bell.
We had apologies from Fred Hamblen, Daryl Sanderson, Paul Seymour, Larry Murray, Andy Bell, Tania Laird and Conrad Martens.
President Elect Simon Brook welcomed all members and in particular our Youth Exchange Student Martina Missarelli, Honorary Member George Keily and special guests Sarah Cooper (Felicity's mum), our rebound studend from France Isabelle Franich and her friend Hayley Winchcombe. Hayley, who lives in Perth, also was a YE Student in France with Isabelle. Simon reminded all that our meeting of 29th July [that is this week, folks!] will be a social affair at the Paradox Cafe in Surfers Paradise (it is at the Transit Centre near the Bruce Bishop Car Park). Members will purchase their own breakfast a la carte and make a donation of $5.00 to the club. Simon also re-iterated that members are requested to look out for candidates to the upcoming GSE Team selection for Pennsylvania: Nominations are being sought for both team members as well as for a team leader. Conversely, our club may want to be involved in hosting the incoming team? More details can be found on our District Website: http://rotary9640.org/SitePage/group-study-exchange. And on 12th August, we'll meet together with the Hope Island Club - see Events section on the Website.
 Chris Thurtell then formally introduced Martina Missarelli in interview style (picture left: Sarah Cooper, Chris Thurtell, Martina Missarelli, Isabelle Franich and her friend Hayley Winchcombe from Perth). Martina has the most delightfulla Italian accentta - if you weren't there, you definitely missed something. As outlined in last week's bulletin, Martina comes from the town of Pian Camuno in Northern Italy. She has enrolled at St Hilda's Girls High School where she starts on 27th July.
Martina, currently just 17 years old, gave us a brief introduction to her family, her school live in Italy (they go to school 6 days a week), her sports and hobbies (Tennis, Music). She sees her future in a double degree of economics and law. And travel: to the US, Canada... Her first impressions of Australia? "Love it!!" No doubt, there will be a more substantial presentation coming up in the foreseeable future!
Doug Lipp advised that the Crazy Whist game will now be held a week laster on Saturday 8th August, to avoid a clash with the Suns Horizon event on the 1st August and a clash of bookings at the hall. See Events section on the Website and download file. You don't need to know how to play - instructions will be provided on the evening! More details on location etc in next week's bulletin. Just mark your calendar!
Gerald East is organizing the Suns Horizon raffle ticket selling team for Saturday 1st August. Be at the Gate at 5:10 pm for game start at 7:20 pm.
Honorary Member George Keily announced that Apple Marketing had raised $6,050.00 for our Wheelchair Project, which brings it to a total of $14,850 for the last 12 months. A big Thank You to the team at Apple Marketing! George also has been hyperactive himself: he's collected about 4 Kg of Stamps from Apple Marketing, and has collected some 500 pairs of spectacles from various Optometrists to be forwarded to Donations in Kind for re-deployment in developing countries. Well done George! George also put forward a recommendation for a supplier of Pool Fencing: Peter Hayes, a member of the Broadwater Southport Rotary Club (for which he promptly got fined by the Sergeant later on - there is no free advertising...)

 Rotar-what? may be the question many people, who have not been involved in Rotary before... Ah, to be in the 20's again! Rotaract is a Rotary affiliated organization for young people aged between 18 and 30 years old.
Founded in 1968, Rotaract is represented in some 6,887 clubs in 166 countries across the globe.
Lauchlan and Troy (see picture on left) are board members of the Southport Rotaract club. Currently, they count 13 members and projected to grow to 20+ by December 2015, after the club was 'restarted' again in 2011.
So, what does one get up to if you are a member of Rotaract? Well, to start with, a lot of good, clean fun and fellowship (just have a look at their Facebook site and you get the idea!) But, true in line with the Rotary motto of Service Above Self, they are also involved with fundraising and helping their sponsoring club, the Rotary Club of Southport, to run their Carousel at Broadbeach, planting trees, help with the Gold Coast Marathon, and assist with RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award), RYTS (Rotary Youth Transition Seminar) and the GSE (Group Study Exchange) programs. On the other side of their age group, they are also involved with various Interact Clubs, whose members are High School based.
On Saturday 30th May, the Rotaract Club of Southport is organizing a 'Back to School' Trivia Night to raise funds for the Muravah Foundation, an organization initially established in the slums in Manilla, Philippines to give opportunity to under-privileged kids to complete a university degree. $30 per person, or $220 for a table of 8.

.jpg) Good things come to those who volunteer.RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness) started up for the year on the Gold Coast with our club hosting the Australian Industrial Trade College from Robina. Isabelle Franich our past YEP student, George Keily our Honorary member & Past President, Geoff Croad & Darrell Brown manned the day. During the event, Isabelle was offered a job as a presenter, a paid position. Well done! Because the school has taken part in the event for the last three years & through circumstances, couldn’t be joined by another school to make up numbers, our Gold Coast RYDA subsidised the school to the tune of $455 - money well spent on the first day of a revised program. The next event with All Saints & another group from the Australian Trade College will be held on the 16th June. Because there will be 270 students, two venues - Runaway Bay Sports Complex & Southport Community Centre will need to be utilised with the Rotary Clubs of Gold Coast & Mermaid Beach manning the days.

 Last Saturday, the Suns had a bit of a rough time at the hands of Great Western... But Coordinator Gerald East and his charming wife Margaret, joined by Simon Brook and President Paul Seymour sold raffle tickets for the Suns' Horizon program.
Our next date is Saturday 1st August when the Suns meet the West Coast Eagles. Be at 5:10 p.m. at the gate for a 7:20 p.m. game start......We need at least six people each game. Put your name down with Gerald!
(picture on left: No, Gary Ablett is not switching codes to Soccer! They just had a friendly ball and guernsey exchange with Manchester United).
BTW, do you know the difference between soccer and Aussie Rules Football? In soccer, players desperately try to convince the referee that they are injured. In AFL, the players desperately try to convince the ref that they are NOT injured...

 the " Des La Rance for Pope" campaign has reached new heights: a letter received from a lady named Camille said "...you have humbled me with your love and kindness to humanity..." No doubt about it: Francis, look out! Tania Laird: Now, THAT is sartorial elegance! Those leggings are giving serious competition: sort of Darrell Brown's socks on a lady's legs! [Sorry, no picture, you should have been there! Ed.] Doug Lipp explained to Andy what Crazy Whist is all about. Andy's perception: "People randomly throw cards around, mostly into the middle of the table, and suddenly somebody yells out I've won!!" Gerald East was at the door today, and never have I heard anyone whinging so much: everybody is coming in with 50 dollar bills...! Simon Brook's latest escapade: running the Gold Coast Marathon! |

Warning: this is politically incorrect. So if you don't like this, stop reading right now.
Here is a contribution from Gerald East. It even is clean (well, 98% anyway...)
Murphy, a furniture dealer from Dublin, decided to expand the line of furniture in his store, so he decided to go to Paris to see what he could find.
After arriving in Paris, he visited with some manufacturers and selected a line that he thought would sell well back home.
To celebrate the new acquisition, he decided to visit a small bistro and have a glass of wine.
As he sat enjoying his wine, he noticed that the small place was quite crowded, and that the other chair at his table was the only vacant seat in the house.
Before long, a very beautiful young Parisian girl came to his table, asked him something in French (which Murphy could not understand), so he motioned to the vacant chair and invited her to sit down.
He tried to speak to her in English, but she did not speak his language. After a couple of minutes of trying to communicate with her, he took a napkin and drew a picture of a wine glass and showed it to her. She nodded, so he ordered a glass of wine for her.
After sitting together at the table for a while, he took another napkin, and drew a picture of a plate with food on it, and she nodded.
They left the bistro and found a quiet cafe that featured a small group playing romantic music.
They ordered dinner, after which he took another napkin and drew a picture of a couple dancing.
She nodded, and they got up to dance. They danced until the cafe closed and the band was packing up.
Back at their table, the young lady took a napkin and drew a picture of a four-poster bed.
To this day, Murphy has no idea how she figured out he was in the furniture business!
