Gidday Surfers Sunrise members, fellow Rotarians and Friends of Rotary.
I’m in Melbourne at the moment.
The past few days has typified the fact the Rotary is really just one big family. As some of you may be aware, my Brother in Law fell out of a tree some time ago and is suffering from ‘trauma induced dementia’. He is in a nursing home here in Melbourne. The prognosis is not good and he will be in care for the rest of his life.
He owns a house in Seaford, a suburb next door to Frankston here in Melbourne. Sadly before going into care he became a hoarder. He always was a collector of LPs, cassettes. DVDs and books. He went on a mission to gather as much other stuff as possible. His house became unliveable. To put some number to his collecting he amassed some 20,000 LPs and 10,000 CDs. The house was vacant and was being broken into on almost a weekly bases. We needed to move the LPs to secure storage, a task too daunting to even contemplate for my wife and me. We set aside some funds to get Hoarder Cleaners in to do the job. When i mentioned the issue at Rotary, Ian Mayberry came up with the idea of speaking to Frankston Sunrise Rotary and having them do the job as a fundraiser. Ross Augustine thought the idea was good and contacted PP Peter Richards of Frankston Sunrise, both Ian and Ross are past Foundation Members of that club.
PP Peter Richard’s took control and on Saturday a large Skip bin arrived on site, a large truck was hired and 10 or so members turned up raring to go. All the records and cassettes were relocated to a secure facility, the house was cleaned out (we ran out of skip room). What a great job. I cant thank the crew enough.
It is not until you are involved in such a huge physical undertaking like this that you realise Rotary and individual Rotarians are truly wonderful, they are not just people but they are like family. i have always said that Police no matter where in the world they are are, as a fellow Police officer, when you meet there is an automatic understanding and attraction. The same happened with the members from Frankston Sunrise.
I feel honoured to be a member of the Rotary family.
Looking forward to our vocational visit to Kieser Clinic on Wednesday.
Nothing changes if nothing changes.
