President's Message

Mario Fairlie

Greetings, fellow members, associate members and friends of Surfers Sunrise Rotary,

The first message from me at the beginning of a new Rotary year.

I look forward to working with you all over the next twelve months, with the support and guidance of our directors, but more importantly, alongside each and every one of our Members and Associates. We are all volunteers united by a common purpose—to serve humanity and make a positive difference in our community and beyond.

The new Rotary year started off very well indeed, with the induction of our newest member, Rusty Lush, who re-joined our club after about two decades of absence. Welcome to Surfers Sunrise, Rusty!

Already this week, I had the pleasure of attending the Changeover of the Inner Wheel Club of Gold Coast North, representing our Club. Another significant activity was the packing of a 40-foot container, which is already on its way to South Africa. Several Rotary Clubs in South Africa will be involved in distributing and delivering the wheelchairs to those in need. A sincere thank you to everyone who gave up their Saturday to help pack the container. Your efforts will make a real difference to the lives of many disabled children and adults.

Last week also saw another very successful Bunnings barbecue. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time and contributed to making it such a successful fundraiser.

Sunday, 12 July 2026 – Surfers Sunrise Changeover Luncheon
Bookings have now closed for what remains our major annual social event. Once again, Graeme Isaacson has organised an outstanding venue—the top floor of the TRYP by Wyndham Hotel in Southport. Despite increasing costs across for just about everything, we have been able to keep the ticket price the same as last year.
Our thanks also go to Kieser for generously sponsoring the welcome drink and canapés before the luncheon begins. Please arrive on time so you can enjoy this hospitality and fellowship before the formal proceedings commence.

Monday, 26 October 2026 – Surfers' Sunrise Golf Day
Please mark the date in your diary for our annual Surfers' Sunrise Golf Day, to be held at Surfers Paradise Golf Club. Now is the time to start getting your friends, colleagues and golfing mates together for what promises to be another fantastic day.
The Golf Day remains our Club's major annual fundraiser, and its success depends on the support of our members, sponsors and participants. Brochures are now available for members wishing to play, sponsor a hole, or help secure sponsorship from local businesses.

Have a great week.

Coming Wednesday 8th July: Social Meeting
This coming Wednesday 8th July will be a social meeting at the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club. Come along for a cuppa and/or breakfast. If the weather is nice we might sit outside, (otherwise on the ground floor, at the northern end). Lots of good banter and laughter, and - believe it - sometimes there are more club related matters discussed and solutions determined than on a formal meeting!

Last Wednesday: Letitia Stringer - Scam prevention
We all have received hundreds, nay, thousands of junk emails and text messages, and we might derisively dismiss and delete them. But what about if your child texts you "It's Grace here. I'm in Perth and I've been in an accident. I've lost my phone with my Credit Cards. I need to pay urgently for my accommodation. It's horribly cold down here. Can you please transfer $2,255.00 to my account? Here are the details..."  Note: with AI, this might be a much more real voice message. Yes, in your daughter's voice! Now, don't get me started on Identity Theft...

Have you considered how to deal with this situation? Do you have a family password? (No, don't make it your dog's name. You probably posted a heap of photos of your dog on Instagram or Facebook). There are dozens of different ways you can be scammed. Elderly people are particularly vulnerable, and that is what Leticia's presentation was all about. In the Download Section, you will find a PDF that provides some excellent information on what scams are out there (about 20 different major types!) and how to fight them. Yes, fight. You can report them. How? Well, download the PDF and read it. There is much more on the Department of Fair Trading website: Click here.

Letitia Stringer is an investigation Officer with the Department of Fair Trading. Thank you, Letitia, for joining us at Surfers Sunrise Rotary!
Meet our (re)newest member: Rusty Lush
Many years ago, Rusty was not only a member of our club, but also one of its regular Sergeants at Arms. After a lengthy absence, he's rejoined and was inducted at this morning's meeting. Welcome back, Rusty!

Inspirations - well, sort of... 080726
Just got back from my psychologist, he told me I suffer from hypochondria.
I can’t believe it. Not on top of everything else!

Of all tyrranies, a tyrrany sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies C.S. Lewis, "The Humanitarian Theory of Punishment"

I once lived just a stone’s throw from a family who all died from mysterious accidents.
