President's Message

Greetings, fellow members, associate members and friends of Surfers Sunrise Rotary,

At the wheelchair shed, we sometimes receive bicycles in reasonably good condition. These, rather than breaking them down to make our wheelchairs, are renovated, to sell to the public as a method of raising additional funds for the project. We will be asking members to assist on the day and run a pre-check on the bikes prior to sales. At this stage the dates for these sales are:
  • Saturday 20 June 2026
  • Saturday 12 September 2026
  • Saturday 5 Decembers 2026
Key dates to remember this month
  • A joint board meeting of the existing and new board members for 2026/27 has been called for 2 June at TRYP by Wyndham Hotel for 7:30 am start.
  • Our club’s Changeover this year will be at TRYP by Wyndham Hotel on the 12 July 2026; booking will open soon.
  • Our District Changeover will be held on 28th June 2026 at 11:30 am Currumbin RSL. I encourage members to attend. You must book: www.trybooking.com/DKUEM
  • We have a Bunnings BBQ on 27th June 2026. Ross will forward the roster.
  • Surfers’ Sunrise Golf Day will be held this year on 26th October 2026 at Surfers Paradise Golf Club. Brochures are now available for any member looking to play on the day or supply sponsorship – See Download Files.

Stories
This coming Wednesday 03 June: Cr Darren Taylor returns
At his last visit on 22nd April, we simply ran out of time - the questions just kept coming. So, Cr Darrent Taylor has agreed to come back to our club next week. This one will be in a slightly different format: All members were invited to submit their questions and follow-up questions (submissions have now closed, but you still can ask at the meeting, provided there is time). The questions submitted were sent to Darren in advance, to give him a chance to research the issue beforehand.
Usual place and time: Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club, 07:00 am for 07:30 am sharp start.
Last Saturday was MUNA
MUNA stands for Model United Nations Assembly. Teams are sponsored by various Rotary clubs to represent nations that are assigned to them (Rotary Surfers Sunrise sponsored three teams from Trinity Lutheran College), and they are expected to debate the position of their assigned country effectively, just as if they were at a real UN Assembly in New York. And for all we know, some of these students might well one day be doing just that! What a wonderful Youth Service project!

This annual event is held in multiple Rotary districts. Our district, 9640, held its event last Saturday. At the time of publishing, your editor was unable to obtain results, so keep watching this space!
Knitted quilts to go with our wheelchairs to cold regions
Last Saturday, we received a pallet load of knitted quilts. They were made by loving women at a location we are not permitted to disclose, using materials provided by the ladies from the Surfers Paradise Catholic Church. They then again collected the finished product and brought it to our wheelchair factory, shrink-wrapped. How good is that! They will be included in shipments destined for regions where it can get quite cool, such as the South African hinterland.
What a wonderful present! Thank you!

Very generous donation from Grand Motors Toyota
At last Wednesday's meeting our members welcomed Katherine Unwin from Grand Motors Toyota in Southport, to present her with a Certificate of Appreciation. Via their company (Katherine's husband Tim Unwin is the Dealer Principal of this renowned car dealership) have made a very substantial donation to our club, specifically to be directed to local services. In recent months, we have started two major, ongoing youth projects (School Mates and our engagement with Youth Outreach), and this coming weekend, we are sponsoring three teams from Trinity Lutheran College to compete in the Model United Nations Assembly in Tweed Heads.

Your donation will be certainly make a difference! Thank you, Katherine and Tim and Grand Motors Toyota.

I’ll let you know.

“The upheavals [of artificial intelligence] can escalate quickly and become scarier and even cataclysmic. Imagine how a medical robot, originally programmed to rid cancer, could conclude that the best way to obliterate cancer is to exterminate humans who are genetically prone to the disease.” Nick Bilton, tech columnist New York Times
