President's Message

Hi there fellow Rotarians and friends.

Another week gone and my knee is getting better, a little slower than expected and sleep is a bit of a mission but all and all is well.

Looking forward to this week's Lutzy Award presentation. Ray Higgs and Graeme Isaacson have done a great job organising it. Note: if you didn't book to order a meal, you are still most welcome to attend; the high chairs and small bar room tables will be there for just this purpose.

Our first Board Meeting is on Thursday evening at the Surfers Paradise Golf Club (1 Fairway Drive, Clear Island Waters).

Recently I met up with a guy I worked with in the NZ Police back in the 70s. Amazing looking back on some of our exploits and the clarity of the memories. We decided that we were remarkable and the feats we performed could not be matched by anyone today. Ah... Memories. [Yeah, I know. Not only is my short term memory very poor, but so is my short term memory... Ed.]

Remember - Do as you fear most.

Andrew Bell,
President 2024-25

Bookings have closed, but you are welcome to attend (simply buy your own breakfast and sit at the back)

This is one of our premier events of the year. Created in honour of our late member Keith Lutz, the award, in the form of a fully fledged surf ski, is presented to a young emerging leader personality, nominated by the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club. Breaking News: Vanuatu X-Ray Unit had been formally transferred
This only came in early this afternoon: Mario Fairlie has just returned from Vanuatu, after he, Dr Graham Sivyer and Rock O'Keefe met with Vanuatu Ministry of Health authorities in Port Vila to conduct the formal hand-over of the Pentecost Island X-Ray and Pathology unit. Look out for a more detailed report, some photos, in next week's bulletin.

Youth Exchange has re-started: are we in it?
After the three year hiatus due to Covid, the Youth Exchange Program has restarted this year. Over the years, our club has supported numerous YEP students, but to make a principal decision whether we are able to participate, we would have a commitment of hosts. Usually, the incoming student is hosted for four periods of 3 months each, at least one of these are the parents of the outgoing student. Hosts don't need to be members of our club, but need to be approved.

Lucy Thorburn (picture), who was the winner of the 2017 Lutzy Award, represented our club in 2019-20.

So, before we can proceed to the next step, we need expressions of interest. For more details, please contact our Youth Services Director Thomas Robinson directly.
