The Barbeque on Friday was organised by Carol & Geoff Croad. The whole event was outstanding and every enjoyed the food & the fellowship. The meat for the Barbeque was organised by Angus Miller (with a special treat of Kangaroo Rissoles coming from Richard & Sue Smith) and he also took on the responsibility of chief cook. A very big thanks to all.
Saturday, they visited our Shed and were able to see firsthand the wonderful things that have been created at the Shed including our Wheelchairs & the flat pack school building. I believe they were extremely impressed. Saturday afternoon they were taken to Springbrook. Sunday a visit to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. On Monday we took them to Boonah where we met at the Boonah Visitor’s Information Centre for hand-over to the Warwick Sunrise Club hosts. The whole experience of meeting and hosting Rotarians opens up new horizontals for each and every one involved.
Thank you for all those involved. The ones that took them into your homes. A very big big thank you to Franz & Catherine for all the work in organising the whole program.
Other matters that are worth mentioning is the progress on the POD. It is now ready to be shown next Saturday morning to Councillor Dawn Crichlow and Kathleen Vlasic from Rosie's. We are expecting them at 9:00 am, together with someone from the newspapers and the TV. Larry’s objective is for us to get some publicity and promotion from this! Appreciate your support on Saturday.
Later in the morning, at about 10:30 am, we have organised a meeting with Dr Graham Sivyer, Dr Denis O'Brien and a few others from Broadbeach and Gold Coast Clubs to review Des La Rance’s latest design and to determine the way forward to proceed with an application for a Rotary Global Grant for the equipment not included in the Building.

I design lifestyle changes and individualized diets. These qualified interventions are drawn from thorough review of hundreds of published peer-reviewed research papers.
If required, I work cooperatively with your medical oncologists/radiation oncologists/oncology surgeons/urologist/ haematologist and your GP. I also collaborate with other health care practitioners such as acupuncturists, psychologists, osteopaths, massage therapists, naturopaths and nutritionists. At all times, drugs/herbs/nutrients interactions are carefully analyzed."
What a weekend! Last Friday, Surfers Sunrise welcomed the Rotary Friendship Exchange team from Seattle and British Columbia. After we took them up to Skypoint at the top of Q1, Geoff & Carol Croad hosted a typical Aussie Bar-be-que at their resort, with the capable assistance of Angus 'Onion King' Miller in the role of chief bar-be-quer.
On Saturday, we first showcased our Project Shed (see picture), where Des La Rance gave them a good run-down on how the project evolved some 23 years ago, going all the way through to the total of well over 9,000 wheelchairs shipped since, plus numerous school buildings and the House of Hope in Apia, Samoa (see the Story of the Surfers Sunrise Wheelchair Trust in the Download Section on the right, or click on this link). A hearty Thank You! to Lee Smith and Pam Peterson, who donated $100.00 to the Wheelchairs Trust. Then, we moved up to the Springbrook National Park for lunch. And - after hardly any rain for the past two or three months, guess what! It rained. Well, a Rainforest is not really a Rainforest without rain, isn't it?
Sunday saw the entire group at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. They gave us a very healthy discount on the normal ticket price! Thank you Chris Thurtell, for activating some of your special connection there to get a nice area of their Cafe set aside, just for us. Naturally, our guests from North America just adored the Koalas, the Kangaroos, the Bird Show, the Sheep Shearing, the huge size Aviaries... In the evening, President Mario invited us to a dinner at one of the restaurants in Surfers.
The RFE team has now moved on to their next hosts in Warwick. After that they'll be in Lismore for a few days, then come back to the Gold Coast. There is another chance to meet them: the Broadbeach Rotary Club will host them at their club meeting on Tuesday 12th November, at the Lone Star Tavern in Mermaid Beach. Are you joining us? A huge Thank You! goes to the hosts: Geoff & Carol Croad, Karen Holland & Peter Zollig, Richard & Sue Smith, Chris & Marie Thurtell, to my darling wife Catherine, President Mario Fairlie and all the helpers and participants for the sterling effort to make our guests comfortable. We have had nothing but very positive feedback; equally, on our side we enjoyed their company immensely.

For the first time, this year we'll have a Christmas Dinner rather than a Christmas Breakfast. This will not only allow members, their partners and friends to have a Christmas drink, but - let's face it - the atmosphere will be considerably more festive. The Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club has agreed to set aside the upstairs Restaurant (where our "formal" meetings are held) for us. Dinner will be served, and the Cash Bar will be open. Projected price per person is $25.00 - to be confirmed.

Duty Roster - note: subject to change. Please check every week:
New duty: Fellowship / Project Shed. What does it entail? There are two aspects to this:
a) At the club meeting, your job is to ensure that all members, in particular new members, visitors and guests, and in particular the Guest Speaker, are welcomed, are introduced to other members and are comfortable. If required, explain the usual procedures, e.g. when we have our meal, when the speaker is expected to be at the rostrum etc.
b) This person is also to attend the Project Shed on the following Saturday, as the representative of our club and to assist in the general management.
