The latest ROTARY SLEEPING POD has been costed out by Des La Rance. This is his new design which will be manufactured of timber. We have decided to go ahead to manufacture the first one and to refine the design as we go forward. The cost is approximately $800.00. (Picture of draft below right).
Next, it would seem that the money to pay for the shipment of the 40 foot container to Papua New Guinea should be received within the next 10 days. Therefore, we will need to pack it with 180 to 200 wheelchairs. Larry Murray advises that the packing should be programmed for Saturday 25th August. We need your help to pack the container. It should only take about 2 hours if we have enough volunteers. If you’re not so strong, bring your son or daughter and supervise them. Arrival time at 8:30 am at the Shed. Remember the morning tea is usually outstanding. Finally, this project of 180+ wheelchairs will change the lives of mainly disabled and disadvantaged children in New Papua Guinea. Your help is paramount.
The old rubber tyres still remain in the backyard of the Shed and hopefully we can resolve this issue this week and have them finally picked up.
The joint meeting at the Southport Yacht Club with Broadwater Southport Club last Friday was a success and well received. Their meeting was similar to ours of 4-5 years ago. Frizelle Sunshine Automotive were inducted into their club as a corporate member. The remainder of the meeting was pleasant. The food was very similar, perhaps a little more sophisticated compared to what we had when our club met at that venue several years ago.
Our next formal meeting is the 14th August at the Surf Club. This meeting is important as it will include:
The induction of several new members to our club
The presentation of the 'Lutzy' award to Junior Life Saver of the Year, Jazmin Zimmerman
It will also be a joint meeting with Broadwater Southport Rotary Club
Formal proposal to change the Clubs bylaws to allow Corporate Membership
We want to extend the hand of friendship as we will have lots of visitors including Jazmin Zimmerman and her family, members of the Surf Club, Keith Lutz's wife Jan, potential corporate members and the members of Broadwater Southport Club visiting. It will be a great meeting and one not to miss!
Finally, the next Board meeting is this Monday 5th August at 5:30 pm. Our major objective is to review the proposed new bylaws to allow corporate membership. If you would like any matter to be brought to the attention of the board, please don’t hesitate to call me.

Last Wednesday, we enjoyed the hospitality of the Rotary Club of Broadwater-Southport, at our former haunt, the Southport Yacht Club. If anything proves that the presence of over 50 people provides just that very distinct additional vibrancy to a Rotary meeting, well - here is proof! The place was literally buzzing! With us Surfers Sunrise members being the guests, we didn't have much to do other than pick up our breakfast and let it all happen. And yes, the scrambled eggs were better than in the past and the bacon was crisp...
There were some high profile guests there too, including our Assistant Governor, Neil Baldwyn, and one of our shortly to be inducted new members, Karen Thomas, came along. After the initial greeting by their President Denis O'Brien, our President Mario Fairlie gave a short address to the meeting, foreshadowing the potential of our two clubs amalgamating to create a super strong breakfast club. Mario also briefly mentioned our long standing Wheelchairs project, as well as the two upcoming major projects of the 'POD' (see Mario's message above) and the X-Ray unit for Vanuatu.
Our hosts beat us to inducting a Corporate Member: Frizelle's Sunshine Automotive is their latest addition. [Not long to go now peeps until we'll have our own Corporate members; just a matter of finalizing the paperwork on for our club so we comply with all the rules. Ed.]
The guest speaker for the morning was that Gold Coast icon, John Goldstein of Goldstein's Bakery fame (see picture above, with Spt-B'water President Denis O'Brien). But John wasn't extolling on the undoubted quality of his bakery's products; John was elaborating on the history of the Gold Coast Marathon, now in its 40th year, and he was very much part of the original organizing committee. Indeed, it was the Rotary Club of Surfers Paradise which started it all on the 2nd of September 1979. There were some very high profile people involved, such as Ron McMasters (famous developer and builder of High Rise Apartment blocks) and even the Army was called in to provide security and "control of the masses". Picture on right: John Goldstein is quite sure that this is the only remaining original singlet of the inaugural event.
At our next formal meeting, on the 14th of August we'll return the compliment: we'll have a joint meeting again, this time at our location at the Surfers Paradise SLSC. Put it into your diary now!
... the man is indefatigable... Here is a picture of our club's Director for Public Relations, Neil Thurlow, in his brand new T-shirt, presented to him after cycling for a solid 100 Km in the MS Brissie to Bay event [I get tired just thinking about it! Ed.] . Neil raised some $1,320 sponsorship for the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.

Geoff Croad is looking for volunteers to help "herding" senior level school kidsf (16-18 years old), when they attend the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) training session. It is easy work, essentially just getting them to follow you from one classroom to another when they move to the next lesson. Our assistance is required on the following days:
Wednesday 7th August: Elanora State High School
Wednesday 28th August: Southport Community Centre
Friday 18th October: Marymount College

RYDA is an essential road safety platform for young drivers and their passengers – it doesn’t come from driving lessons, books or the schoolclassroom. However, RYDA does support school curricula, giving teachers an important toolbox of additional resources and allowing them to harness the motivation and competencies taken from the RYDA day to enhance their classroom curriculum based lessons.

New duty: Fellowship / Project Shed. What does it entail? There are two aspects to this:
a) At the club meeting, your job is to ensure that all members, in particular new members, visitors and guests, and in particular the Guest Speaker, are welcomed, are introduced to other members and are comfortable. If required, explain the usual procedures, e.g. when we have our meal, when the speaker is expected to be at the rostrum etc.
b) This person is also to attend the Project Shed on the following Saturday, as the representative of our club and to assist in the general management.
