This week: Meet up with Clint Ford from The Suns at Ollie & Luca
This week, we again meet at Ollie & Luca, 15-21 Via Roma, Isle of Capri(albeit in a different area, hopefully with better accoustics) - see mudmap.
Our guest speaker will be Clint Ford, one of the friendly people from The Suns AFL team (well, aren't they all friendly? Except when they play Collingwood.. ☺)
Last week we had a trial meeting at Ollie & Luca's on the Isle of Capri.
Barry Lea was at the door, Geoff Croad was Chairman and Ian Mayberry was Sergeant.
We had apologies from Ashley Harris, Andy Bell, Gerald East (and there may have been others, but the crowd was a bit boisterous and your Editor cannot guarantee that this report is absolutely accurate).
Vice President Ian Mayberry welcomed guests Alex Batcu, Chris Mitchell (guest of John Franich), Honorary Queenslander Ann O'Connor, our Youth Exchange Student from Austria, Laura Burtscher and Guest Speakers Grant Pforr and Bernie Scobie. Ian, foreshadowing Grant Pforr's upcoming presentation, indicated the club's support of the proposal to participate in the Festival of Elegance.
Wheelchair Trust Chairman Daryl Sanderson reported the latest happenings from the Wheelchair Shed: We sold some "conventional" (e.g. suitable for local use) wheelchairs and cleared $500.00. Daryl reported that, in total, the Wheelchair Trust has produced some 7,210 Wheelchairs. In total, the Wheelchair Trust spent over $1,086.000, which includes the expenditure for the schools and orphanages we erected in Dili (Timor Leste), Vanuatu, Phuket (Thailand), at Mataa'fa and Apia (Samoa), including our most recent major project, the House of Hope. Howzat !??!
Mario Fairlie had an exciting few weeks behind him: after visiting Bali (making up at one of the local Rotary Clubs with Gerald East), he was back in Oz for 36 hours, then flew off to Amsterdam to attend a Broadcastign Conference. Some 80,000 delegates were there. To give you a taste: the next TVs will have 4000 pixels (currently it is 1366 x 768 - 1080 pixels) and the Tokio Olympics in 2020 are expected to be broadcast in 8000 pixels. [Hopefully the NBN will have caught up by then... Ed.]
Peter Morgan proudly declared that grandchild number 5 is on the way and, in tradition, donated $100 to buy a wheelchair in its name (to be announced).
Ian was not just standing in for the President, but also for our regular Sergeant Andy Bell.
Mario Fairlie: You are sure getting around, aren't you! Time to catch up on all the fines you missed over the last few weeks... Ann O'Connor: disappeared with Fred Hamblen to get more sausages at the Bunnings Bar-be-que and didn't return for an hour. [that was more likely to be Fred's fault; he went all the way to Harbour Town instead of the local shop just down the road...]. Alex Batcu: just to get you gradually used to it... Angus Miller, looks like your chances of becoming President of Scotland have greatly diminished... Des La Rance went on a Fact Finding Mission looking for caravans... Bob Harrison: good to see that we can (fine you)! Adrian Crowe, what's this business wearing a hat inside a restaurant?
The Festival of Elegance - 15th to 19th October 2014
The Inaugural Year
Former Gold Coast City Councillor Grant Pforr, together with his friend Bernie Scobie OAM, presented his vision: Following the tracks of the original Concourse d'Elegance which was organized at the time in 1969 by the late Keith Williams (founder of Seaworld). According to historical records, Williams started this competition to "marry the best cars of the day with the slinkiest fashions". [Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose... Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr, 1808-1890]
It will encompass a Marina, Hotrods, Super-elegant cars (which is where Mario Fairlie comes in with his freshly restored Mercedes old timer). It will be held at multiple venues in the northern area of the Gold Coast.
Our club is invited to participate by running a Sausage Sizzle at the venue. Whilst, due to this being the inaugural event, one cannot provide any specific results to be expected, there is no question that it would be a major fundraising opportunity for us. At last Thursday's board meeting, the board has fully supported the proposal by Chris Thurtell that we adopt this project.

Bernie Scobie OAM, in his capacity of Chairman of the gold Coast North Youth Centre Inc, briefly outlined his organization's aims. The program is called Youth Point Connect (YPC). It is located at the Runaway Bay Skate Park, on the corner of Oxley and Lae Drive. Bernie's motto: "We cannot build our future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future". Youth Point Connect (YPC) provides lifestyle and educational programs to engage local young people, by offering activities to complement the existing use of the skate bowl during school holidays. A Healthy Eating and Physical Activity project delivers education on healthy eating and provides free afternoon teas and healthy barbeques on Saturdays.

Wheelchair Trust Chairman Daryl Sanderson is looking for more volunteers
