At last Wednesday's meeting, we had much pleasure to present the 'Lutzy' Award to a well deserving Jazmin Zimmerman. It is presented annually in memory of our Charter Member Keith Lutz, who also was a major mentor and a driving force in the Surf Life Saving movement.

 

Franz Huber and Andy Bell were at the door and Charles Thomasson was Chairman.  This was also a combined meeting with the Rotary Club Broadwater / Southport.  Two major events dominated: the induction of three new members and the presentation of the 'Lutzy Award' - see further on.

 

We had apologies from Mark Twyford, Gerald East, Richard Smith, Fred Hamblen and Graeme Isaacson.  President Mario Fairlie opened the meeting by welcoming the members and guests of the Rotary Club of Broadwater / Southport as well as the numerous members of the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club. Mario immediately proceeded to the induction of three new members: Karen Holland, Ben Illes and Doug Garvie (see separate story above). Next on the agenda was the ratification of our club's new 'Corporate' membership category (affirmed). This was followed by a vote of members, deciding our club's vote for or against the proposed amalgamation of Districts.  Mario re-iterated the case for a 'No' vote he stated in his President's Message, whilst Treasurer (and Past District Treasurer) Doug Lipp outlined his case for a yes vote.  The vote was clearly in favour of the negative.  Mario also invited nominations for the Engineering Summer School (Year 11 - 12).

 

Jenny Crewes (RC of Broadwater Southport) issued an invitation for us to attend a special meeting of her club with the Southport Chamber of Commerce (see separate story above) and Letitia De Lima pointed to a brochure on our tables outlining her club's various projects.

 

Simon Brook, former District Chair of RYTS (Rotary Youth Transition Seminar, Year 11-12) briefly elaborated on this very important youth camp. Click on this link for details.

New duty: Fellowship / Project Shed.  What does it entail? There are two aspects to this:

a) At the club meeting, your job is to ensure that all members, in particular new members, visitors and guests, and in particular the Guest Speaker, are welcomed, are introduced to other members and are comfortable. If required, explain the usual procedures, e.g. when we have our meal, when the speaker is expected to be at the rostrum etc. 

b) This person is also to attend the Project Shed on the following Saturday, as the representative of our club and to assist in the general management.

One afternoon a  Banker  was riding in his limousine when he saw two men along the roadside eating grass.  Disturbed, he ordered his driver to stop, and he got out to investigate. He asked one man, "Why are you eating grass?" "We don't have any money for food," the poor man replied.  "We have to eat grass." "Well, then, you can come with me to my house and I'll feed you," the Banker said. “But sir, I have a wife and two children with me.  They are over there, under that tree" "Bring them along," the  Banker replied.  Turning to the other poor man, he stated, "You come with us also."

The second man, in a pitiful voice, then said, "But sir, I also have a wife and SIX children with me!" "Bring them all, as well," the  Banker (*) answered. They all entered the car, which was no easy task, even for a car as large as the limousine was. Once underway, one of the poor fellows turned to the  Banker  and said, "Sir, you are too kind.  Thank you for taking all of us with you." The  Banker  replied, "Glad to do it.  You'll really love my place.  The grass is almost a foot high."
