Neil Thurlow was at the door, Daryl Sanderson was Chairman and Andy Bell was Sergeant.
We had apologies from Gerald East, Terry O'Shea, Ian Mayberry, Ray Higgs and Geoff Croad.
President Paul Seymour welcomed all members, our Youth Exchange Student from Italy, Martina Missarelli and of our Guest Speakers, Alan Burrell and Capt Mike Hughes from Mercy Ships. Paul briefly elaborated on the upcoming Polio Plus collection and its importance: Nigeria has now been taken off the list of Polio affected countries - only two left, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mark it in your diary: The annual Christmas Breakfast, organized by Graeme Isaacson, has been set for 16th December and will be held at the Marriott Hotel. More about it as we get closer to it. Paul also advised that on 28th October, we'll again have a social meeting at the Paradox Coffee Roasters in Surfers Paradise. See event diary for more details.
Tania Laird and Doug Lipp, who coordinate our club in relation to the Race Day on 15th October briefly outlined last minute details.
Wheelchair Trust Chairman Daryl Sanderson made contact with people from Tambourine Mountain, and had a phone call from a gentleman from Gosford North Rotary Club, who will purchase wheelchairs to be sent to Madagascar... And a gentleman from Loganholme offered him and his ute for transport services. And even though it has been a while, the broadcast by the ABC's 7:30 Report is still generating interest: a Rotary Club in Gippsland, Victoria, will arrange for bicycles to be collected and freighted to us to be converted into wheelchairs.

 .jpg) Having run one of the largest Architecture Companies for decades, Darrell's life would literally have revolved around plans, both in physical Blueprint form as well as in the sense of planning. Thus, it comes as no surprise that he has started planning for his upcoming year as District Governor 2017-18 the moment he decided to accept his nomination.
Darrell has already had extensive experience in District Leadership teams: some four decades ago, when his business partner Ron Burling was Governor of (then) District 263 in 1977, Darrell was his District Secretary. "In those days, most of the paperwork was done by our office staff... things have indeed changed now!" Still, Darrell has a huge amount of experience in the field: Multiple tenures as Club President, Assistant Governor since 2011, organization of numerous events, including ongoing commitment to the RYDA (Rotary Youth Driver Awareness) program, just to name a few.
The membership of Surfers Sunrise nominated Darrell in his absence last year. After carefully discussing this with his charming wife Kerrie, he decided to accept the nomination and, after numerous interviews, presentations of papers (for example, Darrell did an extensive paper on the new Rotary Foundation Grant Model), was promptly elected by the District's committee. So, what does it actually entail?
One is immediately part of the District's Senior Leadership Team and part of the District's Youth Exchange Program Committee, one participates in multiple instruction periods, including an entire week in Melbourne (BTW, refer to last week's article about our Australian International President for 2017/18). There is also potentially a re-organization of the Australian Districts' geographical boundaries coming up.
Darrell has already secured many of the major positions amongst which are Sue Randel who will stay on as District Secretary and our own Doug Lipp will stay on as District Treasurer.
One of the major challenges is the organization of the annual District Conference. After multiple conferences "in the bush" (including next year's in our current Governor Anne Egan's home town of Murwillumbah), Darrell feels it is time to have it back on the Gold Coast again. But that presents numerous additional items of concern: ensure you avoid all other shows and major events and substantially higher costs to stage the event being the two weightiest ones. Darrell has already had negotiations with multiple venues, however, no decision has been made at this stage.
But, as always, the devil is in the detail. Besides the venue, a huge list of positions need to be filled to populate the Conference Team and the sub-committees:
- Chairman
- Secretary
- Financing (the costs amount to about $60,000)
- Registration
- Sponsorship, naming rights
- Public Relations
- Guest Speakers and the transport and accommodation of them to/from the Gold Coast and the airport
- Master of Ceremonies
- Sergeant
- Backstage organization
- (list not exhaustive).
Busy times coming up indeed! Start thinking about which position/committee you would like to participate in. Naturally, whilst other Rotarians from the District will be happy to be involved, it is perfectly normal for the Governor's own club (and nominating club) to be the principal organizer. To no doubt, the members of Surfers Sunrise will put their shoulders to the wheel.

Simon Brook, is that the latest style to wear the sunglasses on your neck?? [apparently not, he thought he'd lost them... ] Mitch Brown, I am the one who tells jokes, NOT the chairman! Darrell Brown, usually the epitomy of sartorial elegance: you have let us down this week! What's this business of all casual? Doug Lipp however has now stepped up - have a look at his socks! Top Table (for the benefit of the visitors): Des La Rance, as Pope in waiting: aren't you supposed to drive a Fiat like the (current) Pope? Mitch Brown drives a Fiat, and he has no hope of becoming Pope! Franz Huber, somebody said that you look like a detective. [not sure if I am supposed to take this as an insult or a compliment... Inspector Clouseau? John Wood as in Blue Heelers??] Mario Fairlie, our living legend, our own Six Million Dollar Man... what?? nothing? all well? Speechless! Terry O'Shea: apparently an intruder broke in, and Terry singlehandedly manhandled him...
Finally, two important games coming up on the weekend: Anyone barracking for the Eagles? [there wouldn't have been much joy if you did!] Anyone barracking for the Broncos? Pay up!

Our member and District Treasurer Doug Lipp (he is a race horse owner himself), in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Surfers Paradise, is organizing a Race Day at the Gold Coast Turf Club in October. Further, the day is sponsored by our Sergeant Andy Bell's company Eximm too. Tickets are just $70.00 per head, which includes a sumptuous buffet luncheon as well as afternoon tea and coffee.
