Greetings, fellow members, associate members and friends of Surfers Sunrise Rotary,
February holds special significance in the Rotary calendar, as we celebrate Peace and Conflict Prevention and Prevention Month, alongside Rotary’s 121st Anniversary and World Understanding and Peace Day on 23 February. This period highlights Rotary’s long-standing commitment to peacebuilding and the promotion of goodwill, understanding, and cooperation among people of the world.
The Tri-district Annual Conference will be held on 1-3 May 2006 at RACV Royal Pines Resort and I encourage all Rotarians to attend with like minded leaders and make a lasting impact on communications worldwide. Download the flyers - see Download section.
At our last board meeting it was confirmed that Surfers Sunrise will continue with our current gift for our guest speakers, but the current logo is to be upgraded to a more contemporary design.
Good to see that the renovations at the Surfers Paradise Surf Club have been completed. We have received advice by their management that we are again welcome to conduct our meetings in the upstairs venue, right in full view of the iconic beach front of Surfers Paradise. I should take this opportunity to thank the management and team at the TRYP by Wyndham Hotel for hosting the ‘formal’ meetings of our club for the past 6 months. We much appreciate it.
Are you worried about Osteoarthritis? You don't need to be old to be in danger of getting weak and brittle bones, it can happen to anyone. Kane Chisholm, who is the principal partner of our corporate member Kieser Bundall, will present on new evidence-based programs to alleviate osteoarthritis and improve long-term joint health. This is of particular interest to the older generation. Everyone, including partners and friends are welcome to attend.
This will be the last formal meeting at the TRYP by Wyndham Hotel, 59 Meron Street, Southport. We have been advised that the renovations at the Surf Club are (almost) completed. Therefore, from 18/02/2026 (Social Meeting) onwards, all our meetings will again be at the Surf Club.
Our Wheelchair Project has world-wide renown for providing mobility to disadvantaged children in developing countries. That's "the big one". But it goes beyond that: As discarded bikes are dismantled, all the left-over components are separated into 'General Metal', Aluminium, rubber tubes and general waste. There isn't much of general waste left, but a 10 m3 skip is filled with metal about every two to three weeks, and the aluminium gets recycled separately. Here is a photo of our ute and trailer full of aluminium wheels, to take to the recyclers. The money earned is, of course, ploughed back into the purchase of materials, including consumables such as grinding wheels. We estimate that, over the years, in excess of 40,000 bikes have been recycled rather than going into landfill!
This will be big. Real big: it will be the first conference where three Districts are combining. And it will be held on the Gold Coast, at the Royal Pines Resort.
OK, so you think that May Day is still a long way off... Put the dates in your calendar anyway. Expecting big numbers, this resulting in attracting some real high-profile speakers. For example, the President of the Brisbane Olympics Committee, Andrew Liveris. Download the Conference Flyeras well as theGolf Flyer (Download Section) for more details, and a link to book. Yes, you can book early.
Duty Roster - note: subject to change - please check every week. Note: Fellowship duty also is expected to be at the Project Shed on the Saturday following the meeting
