Snippets from last week's meeting:
Last Wednesday, we again met for a trial at the Southport Life Saving Club.
|
|
Club Administration Director Graeme Isaacson organized a second "trial" for a different venue at the Southport Life Saving Club.
Angus Miller and Gerald East were at the door, Fred Hamblen was Chairman, Ian Mayberry stood in for President Conrad Martens and Andy Bell was Sergeant.
Apologies were noted from President Conrad Martens, Tony Bird, Des La Rance and Mario Fairlie.
Vice President Ian Mayberry welcomed visitors, Honorary Queenslander Ann O'Connor, Errol Roulstone, our Youth Exchange Student from Austria Laura Burtscher, Alex Batcu (father of our Youth Science Forum candidate Maria) and our guest speaker Scotty Gregory of Donate for a Mate Foundation. Ian informed us that, whilst President Conrad had indeed returned from his sojourn to the Queensland Countryside, he had fallen ill. Get well soon, Conrad!
Ray Higgs reminded all that Money Boxes for The Rotary Foundation were still in plentiful supply, Paul Seymour expressed his sincere thanks to all who participated at the previous Sunday's Bar-be-que at Bunnings, and Gerald East wistfully recounted his Rotary experiences on the island of Bali: $16.00 for the meal and the Raffle Prize was a full body massage...
Wheelchair Trust Chairman Daryl Sanderson outlined the latest happenings at The Shed. As has been the case many times before, the boys not just make wheelchairs, they also helped out a lady with her walking cart. We understand she intends to walk around Australia in support of Mental Health. A special thank you to Bruce Rigg who helped at the Shed the previous Saturday.
Youth Services Director Chris Thurtell advised of an upcoming major event where we may be involved in: The Festival of Elegance, to be held over 3 - 4 days in October. (Note: former City Councillor Grant Pforr will give a presentation on this this Wednesday 24/09/14!). Manpower is required in various areas, including Food, Traffic Management, and working behind the bar. Chris formed a mini-committee to make further arrangements.
Chris then introduced Laura Burtscher for a brief outline of her recent experiences at a camp to orient the incoming Youth Exchange Students at Lennox Head. Laura will shortly head off to the Great Barrier Reef for her school holidays, staying with Chris' brother at Airlie Beach (it's a tough life, but somebody's gotta do it... ☺)

PP Darrell Brown arranged a sumptuous menu with 3 options to choose from:
- Bircher Muesli, served with fruit compote, poached fruits & Sugar roasted nuts
- Bacon & Eggs, with oven roasted tomato on sourdough toast
- Grilled balsamic field mushrooms, confit tomato, haloumi, poached egg and toasted foccacia
And another top notch Guest Speaker, organized by Chris Thurtell: former City Councillor Grant Pforr, p;resenting on the upcoming Festival of Elegance

 Alex Batcu: do you know that, in Queensland, if you look like a bikie... - no, riding a high-end BMW bike is no excuse for being late! Darrell Brown, look at that head: are you getting a hair transplant?? Angus Miller, now buddying up with Gerald East to count the money? Chris Thurtell, not only running late, but then causing the serving staff trouble by requiring an additional table to be set up... Bob Harrison, good to see you back again! Gerald East and Simon Brook: what's this business about the homosexual shoes you guys are wearing: Blue Suede? All who didn't assist at last Sunday's Bar-be-que at Bunnings: Larry Murray, Ray Higgs... Anyone who didn't return the Survey from regarding last week's meeting: Bruce Rigg, Geoff Croad, Daryl Sanderson, Simon Brook. And Fred Hamblen and Ann O'Connor: there they were sent to urgently buy additional sausages to bar-be-que. And they went via Robina Shopping Centre. Or Harbour Town or whatever, it was bad enough that we had to despatch Ian Mayberry as well...
Cross-fine by Chris Thurtell for Sergeant Andy: Andy went to see Chris at the business (Seaworld). And there, in full view of Security, he walked across the road with a brown paper bag...

 We may have had some speakers who were full of fire and brimstone, we may have had speakers who fired up our imagination, but we never had a guest speaker who quite literally set one of our members on fire..! |

of poached eggs on muffins, would the idea of munching some cockroaches, caterpillars or scorpions be what our Youth Exchange Student Laura expected to be exposed to...
Scotty is a professional Stuntman. Having been brought up in the era of Evel Knievel, he dreamt of a career in jumping off castles with his clothes on fire... [to each his own, my mother used to say... Ed.] Scotty has done some 10,000-odd live shows around the world, involving Motor Bikes, burns, falls, you name it. And whilst the stuff may look dangerous, Scotty assured us that safety is the absolutely number one priority in all those activities. It was with this assurance that Simon Brook, who organized Scotty's visit, agreed to be set alight. After all, he expected to use his right hand later in the day to draw some architectural art works...
But the principal purpose of Scotty's visit was to make us aware of his charity, Donate for a Mate (DFAM).
DFAM is a non-for profit organisation that raises money for mates in need. He performs dares, pledges, and – as he describes it on his website - often “crazy arse stunts” to receive donations.
Scotty first started DFAM to help support a mate of his, Nigel Harbach, who is fighting Muscular Distrophy Syndrome (MDS) and is awaiting a bone marrow transfer. He raised $25,000. Since then, Scotty has eaten the hottest chillies available; scootered through Surfers Paradise in a bikini; taken on professional fighter John Wayne, went through Ice Bucket challenges and even worn an electric collar which someone was activating at different intervals while he sang the national anthem! And recently, he skolled a container of a mix of milk, beer and raw egg to win $250 towards his cause, and that's just a taste of what Scotty will do to raise money for a mate.
Almost 100% of donations go towards charitable purposes – he only takes a small amount for himself to pay for the insurance.
Scotty urged us to donate blood and/or Bone Marrow. Fewer than 1 in 100 are donating. Yet it could make such a difference t somebody else’s life.

Neil ran the full 100 Km, Francine the 50 Km. Well done!
[However, your Editor has grave concerns about the effects of competition level cycling on the human anatomy. If you carefully look at where "ordinary" top athletes, such as Ben Hooper and the like, have a normal sixpack, Neil's tummy muscles have hardened to look like a single brick laid sideways. If this was to continue at the same rate, one can expect that by next year, the horizontal brick will have expanded to go half way around... Ed.]

This is our annual fundraiser, aiming to match the donation by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation of some US$550 Million. Surfers Sunrise has a proud history of not just meeting but exceeding our target over the past several years.
Only 3 countries remain where Polio still is reported. We are almost there!

OK, so you have gone through your list of potential future Rotarians... but not everyone may want to commit to be an active Rotarian, for various reasons, be that time commitments, financial etc.
