Team Surfers Sunrise, take a bow... a positive attitude may not solve all our problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort! To everyone who stepped up to the challenge of filling board positions next year thank you! We have a full house with all spots filled which is a testament to the positive commitment of our club.... not to mention the many district positions we have also filled!

Entries are open so grab a team, grab a costume (if you dare) and get involved. For this Wednesday 09/11/16, Jo has organized Manuela Whitford, the founder of Friends with Dignity. Manuela comes highly recommended (via the Hope Island Rotary Club).
Friends With Dignity aims to assist all persons impacted by Domestic Violence, not just women and children, but all persons impacted by violence including men, young adults and those from the LGBT community.
"I was always shy, quiet" is how Rosie describes herself... However, these attributes refer to earlier times. There is nothing shy about a person who, without any notes and certainly without PowerPoint, can do a comprehensive, fluent and concise presentation to a large group of people!
The daughter of a hard working migrant couple from Italy, Rosie was born in Brisbane and later her family moved to the Sunshine Coast. And wouldn't her parents be proud of Rosie's achievements: she landed her first job whilst still in school, selling Bagels in the Valley Markets - holding a stall for 5 hours non-stop on her own... She purchased her first house at the ripe old age of 18, commenced University to study for a Bachelor of Applied Science, with specialty in French... and promptly dropped out after some 6 months, to move into a Retail job. Within a short time, she was appointed Store Manager (yes, also at 18 years of age). But bigger and better things beckoned: She wanted to switch over to Life Insurance with Suncorp, only to be told that "sorry, we don't employ consultants under the age of 26." But she was able to land a job with their Call Centre. "I was always on the lookout for things that could be done better", she elaborated. That ultimately led her to Project Management. The pinnacle of that segment of Rosie's career was the design and implementation of a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system, for which Suncorp was nominated for a Gartner Award for Excellence. But the enormous workload took its toll. Her request for 12 months unpaid leave was declined. OK, so a rather abrupt switch ensued: from a major corporate engagement to a home business designing and handcrafting lampshades!
Somewhere in that whirlwind of activity, Rosie married, became pregnant with Trinity (you have met Trinity when she joined mum at our breakfasts during the recent school holidays). An appointment in 2006 to a job with the Queensland Government as a Project Consultant led to her move to the Department of Justice and Attorney General in various positions between 2006 and November 2015. About a year ago, her husband Andrew (an IT Specialist) was head hunted to the Gold Coast. Thus unable to continue in her position, Rosie decided to start her own business. "Peak Performance Specialist" the description of her services. In essence: Applying modern Management Principles to personal life, designing a blueprint on how to combine life and business. She has immense experience, numerous formal qualifications and certifications in Project Management, Modern Psychology, Clinical Hypnotherapy, Neuro Linguistic Programming. But the real benefit to any potential client is is the obvious fact that Rosie has, very successfully, done it all herself already.

Last Wednesday, we enjoyed the company of Dr Daksha Balakrishnan (Rotary Club of Meenambakkam), the Chairperson of the Vocational Training Team (VTT) of District 3230 (Chennai, India), together with her protege, Annette Adith, the daughter of a Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Madras Coromandel (Photo right). 'Daksha' as she prefers to be called, was introduced by District Treasurer Doug Lipp. Doug and his partner Sue, visited Chennai a couple of years ago, where, among other activities, he gave a presentation to one of the local High Schools about our Wheelchairs Project. About two months before that, we enjoyed the company of Daksha's daughter Vikasha (photo below).
Paul Seymour was at the door, Daryl Sanderson was Chairman and Andy Bell was Sergeant.
We had apologies from Peter Morgan, Gerald East, Tania Laird, Jo Gorman, Adrian Crowe and Ian Mayberry.
President Simon welcomed all members and visitors Dr Darksha B. (Rotary Club of Meenambakkam, India) and her protegee, Annette Adith - see separate article below), Karin Kolenko (RC of Hope Island) and Sarah Cooper (our recemt Youth Exchange Student to Finland, Felicity Cooper's mum). Simon complimented all participants at the previous day's Melbourne Cup Luncheon at Seaworld - a resounding success. Special thanks to Doug Lipp and Jo Gorman. Bunnings has confirmed we can have another Sizzle on 18th December, but before that, the Polio Plus collection days on 17th to 19th November are coming up! See Geoff Croad if you are not already on the team.

Wheelchair Trust Chairman Daryl Sanderson reported on the recent events at The Shed: A gentleman named John Kirk delivered some bikes, Andy Rajapakse (RC Burleigh Heads) visited with some guests, the Gatton Men's Shed is involved now - they have taken some 14 kits with them and also will raise funds. And, la piece de resistance: Larry Murray found his lost marbles and donated an entire bag of them to Wheelchairs to be sent to deserving children together with a wheelchair...
Doug Lipp reported on the results of the Melbourne Cup exercise: netting about $900.00! Well done! Thanks go to Andy, Jo, Tania, Mario, Ian and Paul.
Darrell Brown, at the recent Melbourne Cup Luncheon, won his sweep - guess which one? the $10.00, the $20.00 or the $50.00 one? President Simon is still paying for his omission to include the Sergeant when presenting his board at the Changeover [methinks we should introduce a rule akin to the double jeopardy laws... Ed.] = but in addition, Simon's skills in telling jokes need some upgrading... Franz Huber (in the view of the Sergeant that is) was considered to be inappropriately dressed - shorts, shoes and woollen socks are not de-rigeur in Oz... Doug Lipp could not take the smile off his face at the Melbourne Cup - in true Accountant's fashion, he was smelling the money... Paul Seymour kept bragging, but it was his wife Peggy who picked the winners... Chris Thurtell, welcome back; you are indeed working in a disaster industry... Rosie McIntyre was in the news? Sarah Cooper, isn't it about time you became a member?? Mark Twyford, still wearing THOSE shoes! (see right)... Our visitor from India, Daksha B.: you said that "Doug Lipp was a fine man"... He's an accountant! Mitch Brown still suffering, being compared to the Hobbit... Mario Fairlie claims he can't drink Shiraz (which was provided as standard at the Melbourne Cup luncheon), so he orders a bottle of Merlot - and drinks the entire bottle himself!
Under the new categories of "Grouch" and "Shout", the Sergeant was the only one coming up with an entry, praising the top effort of the team selling raffle tickets at the Cup Luncheon at Seaworld.
Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) is conducted regularly about March. It is a Rotary District project designed to create an awareness of the role of the United Nations in mediating international issues. Teams of three students from years 11 or 12 select a country; research its history, politics, economics, peoples, international alignment and policies in current world affairs. Having chosen a country they then debate selected resolutions from each country’s point of view in a mock United Nations Assembly. Two students are then sponsored to attend the national MUNA titles in Canberra in August.
Our club has never, so far, managed to field a team of candidates into this prestigious event. Will 2017 be the first time? Youth Director Tania Laird will be looking for your nominations! Ideally, this should go via a High School's debating teams.
This year's event will be on Saturday 25th March 2017, to be held at the Tweed Heads Civic Centre.
