Welcome to Surfers Sunrise Post.
November in Rotary is Foundation Month and the Rotary Foundation is considered to be in the top 5 Charities in the world.  Each year our club contributes $AUS 100.00 per member to the Rotary Foundation.

Gerald and Margaret East have sent a “thank you" to the Club for the flowers that were sent by the Club on the passing of their daughter.

The final tally for the Golf Day has not yet been calculated, as I am waiting on a bill from the Surfers Paradise Golf Day.  I have received many comments on the day and they have all been good.  Thanks to Charles, Ross and Paul for the organization.  This Friday is a sausage sizzle at Bunnings – so all on the roster please show up.

I have received notification that State MPs John Paul Langbroek and Sam O’ Connor will be attending the project shed on the 22nd November.  I will contact the council representative and see if she can come as well.

This Wednesday at 7.00 am, a board meeting at the Surfers Surf Club - All Welcome!

Thought for the Week: “No”vember - a time to say “no” to people, places and things that drain your energy. [I'll try that next time my wife asks me to clean up the garage... Ed.]

Doug Lipp,
President 2023-24.

Board Meeting this Wednesday 8th November
This Wednesday, whilst also a "social" meeting at the Surfers Paradise SLSC, we will also hold a board meeting there. Members who are not on the board are welcome to attend as observers.
Fundraising Event for Ukraine this Friday
Sorry for the late notice - I wasn't aware of this before. Our District 9640 has organised a fundraising dinner this coming Friday, 10th November, at the Currumbin RSL Club, 165 Durigan Road, Currumbin.  The evening includes an address by the Ukraine Ambassador to Australia, Mr Vasyl Myroshnychenko, as well as entertainment by Ukrainian dancers.

Click on the image to book, or scan the QR Code. If are unable to attend, you can also make a direct donation, using the same QR code. The venue is fully sponsored, so the entire amount raised will go towards supporting Rotary Clubs in Ukraine. Funds will be used to assist with the purchase of medical supplies and provide other aid to the residents affected by the war.
Surfers Sunrise Golf Day 2023
Last Monday, 30th October, we held our annual Surfers Sunrise Golf Day, at the usual venue, the Surfers Paradise Golf Club. As pre-ordered for quite some time, we had perfect weather, a steady breeze keeping us cool. This is one of our major fundraising events of the year. This year's major beneficiaries were the Pancare Foundation, a charity dedicated to researching Pancreatic Cancer, and PCYC Gold Coast, specifically directed towards their youth programs. Pancare is scheduled to speak at our club sometime early in the new year; the PCYC is, of course, well known to most of our members. Sgt Cherie McLean, who is the manager of the local PCYC, brought two delightfully eloquent young people along (see photo album section). How refreshing to see an example of today's youth from the positive side.
And the winners...
The overall winners were (Picture above, from left): Jeremy Stevens, Daniel Bisiker, Daniel Pickering, Graham Lewin. Congratulations!

The Rotary Shield (best Rotary Club associated team) was won by... Surfers Sunrise! (No, before you shout "rigged!!": Wilsons Advisory (see photo on right, from left: Matt Crain, Todd Cole, Dan Howes and Charles Thomasson) is one of our club's Corporate Members, so fully within the rules!

Do you (or know anyone who would)?
We need a few more regular volunteers at the project shed. Do you have a half day (or two) a week to spare? Or do you know somebody who would enjoy the fellowship of fellow volunteer workers at the shed, re-purposing discarded bicycles into wheelchairs? Well over 11,000 have been shipped so far, but the need is constant.

A number of formerly regular volunteers at the project shed have "retired", some due to ill health, some because they landed a job which prevents them from attending Wednesdays and/or Saturday mornings. The work is easy and not heavy. It can involve the dismantling of bikes, the cutting of plywood (using a template, called a "jig"), painting the wood and/or the frames, or assembling, checking and packing the finished product, just to name a few.

If you are interested, please contact Larry Murray or Franz Huber, or simply turn up on Wednesday and/or Saturday morning, from 07:30 am.

Don’t worry about what people think. They don’t do it very often.

Remember, the next time you dislike your life, it's all about perspective.
I have a friend who reads 2 to 3 books a week, works out twice a day, has no financial worries, and has people who want to have sex with him all the time.
And yet he constantly complains about how much he hates prison.
