Gidday to Surfers Sunrise Rotary Club members, associates and friends of Rotary,
We enjoyed a ‘Social meeting’ last week at the Surf Club. We might have been a bit down on numbers, but certainly not in enthusiasm and fellowship.
I had an interesting and informative discussion with President Elect Elizabeth Celi about her love of Rotary and in particular Surfers Sunrise. Elizabeth spoke to me about some of her plans for next year, I can’t share those with you as the discussion was confidential. Suffice to say, next year with Elizabeth at the helm will be outstanding for our great club and its members.
For me, I get a real kick out of watching new members grow and evolve into their membership of Rotary and become at ease with the other members. Our casual meetings certainly encourage the breaking down of any barriers that may be perceived to exist.
Caught up with our Director of Fundraising, Ross Augustine on Saturday morning for coffee along with Honorary Member Barry Lee. Ross has been in NZ for 10 days or so. He and Coryn were visiting their son in Wanaka. Typical of Ross though Rotary and his fundraising portfolio are never far from his thoughts so the discussion on Saturday was 20% his trip and 80% the organisation of 2 further Bunnings sausage sizzles, along with his plans for organising the process for purchases etc for the ‘wheelchair shed’.
Whilst writing this report I received a call for President Paul, who is in Germany at the moment. He tells me he is having a good time despite some inclement weather and is attending a Rotary meeting in a place called Vechta. Should be an interesting experience.
'Formal' meeting this week at TRYP by Wyndham Hotel; look forward to seeing you there.
Remember - nothing changes if nothing changes and do as you fear most.
NOTE: As previously advised, during renovations at the Surfers Paradise Surf Club, our 'formal' meetings will be held at the TRYP by Wyndham Hotel, 59 Meron Street, Southport, NOT at the Surf Club.
Our District Governor John Oomen will be accompanied by his wife Narelle. He advised that he prefers an open meeting, e.g. Questions and Answers, instead of a monologue. If you would like to notify any questions in advance, please send them to Franz Huber.
John is a member of the Rotary Club of Evans Head. He and Narelle run an ICT business in Casino, NSW.
Hard work, but these guys can handle it! A few days ago, a 20-foot container was filled up with 121 Rough Terrain wheelchairs, destined for Sri Lanka. There was some spare space, so we added several 'standard' wheelchairs that had been donated to us from various sources. The distribution at the receiving end will be organised by Vanny Hope, a major international charitable organisation.
Picture: two of our regular hard working volunteers, Nev Tate (left) and Rick Parry. There are a couple more photos (and lots of other goodies) on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/rcsurferssunrise - why not check it out?
Recently got a message from Sherene and Tim who had seen the Channel 9 broadcast, asking if we would have any use for a wheelchair in very good condition? Yes, sure do!
So they brought it with them, as they headed further up north. Came with removable foot plates as well.
Thank you, Tim and Sherene. This will make a disabled person in a developing country very happy.
The Innerwheel Club of Gold Coast North has booked 20 seats for the Sunday Matinee of Oklahoma. This show is sold out, so this isfor the members and associate members of Surfers Sunrise Rotary and their guests only. There is no other way to obtain tickets for the matinee. I’ve trouble understanding all these new features in modern cars. The other day I twisted the dial to R and it played a video of some guy getting run over.
Leadership consists not in degrees of technique but in traits of character; it requires moral rather than athletic or intellectual effort, and it imposes on both leader nd follower alike the burden of self-restraint. Lewis H. Lapham, American author (Editor of Harper’s Magazine) 1935 - 2024
Dear Optimists, Pessimists and Realists: While you were arguing about the glass of water, I drank it. The opportunist.
