President's Message

Gidday fellow Rotarians and friends,

Out of hospital and recovering well from my knee replacement. Thought I was Superman or at least related to him and pushed myself way too hard when I first got home, drove to Robina and did shopping etc. Bad decision, the god of bringing you back to earth took over and I was in a fair bit of pain for a few days. the heavy duty painkillers got a real workout. On the improve now though.

From all reports, last week's meeting was a winner and our guest speakers, arranged by Angus, were not only extremely interesting and professional but relevant to our members as well.

We had a Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings Ashmore on Friday and after a slow start ended up making about $1100. Well done to all. I am sure Franz will comment on it, later in the Bulletin.

Please don't forget to book for one of our highlights of the the year, the Lutzy Award presentation. It is on the 21st of August with a deadline for booking on the 16th.

Looking forward to seeing you on Wednesday morning for our casual meeting and at Benowa Tavern on Thursday evening for a beer.

Remember - Do as you fear most.

Andrew Bell,
President 2024-25

This coming Wednesday 15/08/24 Social meeting
Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club in Gold CoastThis coming Wednesday 15th August, it's just social: meet on the ground floor at the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club bistro, and join us for a chinwag, solving the world's problems, discuss footy (and possibly Olympic) results. Even politics are permitted, but no heavy arguments please!

Then on Thursday late afternoon (from 4:30 pm onwards), some members gather for pre-dinner drinks at the Benowa Tavern. Everyone welcome!
The Science of Kieser - Kane Chisholm & David Adamo
Before you start reading: perhaps download the PowerPoint file from the Download Section on the right. We were unable to show it this morning; regrettably, the big screen in the upstairs venue refused to cooperate with our guest speaker's computer.

Kane Chisholm and David Adamo came strongly recommended by our member Angus Miller, who is subscribing to their program of improving one’s health by a relatively brief, but regular strength training program. Our guests are the local operators of the Gold Coast franchise of this worldwide program. Not only are highly qualified, but they really know what they are talking about. We had almost record attendance this morning, so the subject is obviously of great interes. The vigorous question time is clear proof.

So, why should you seriously consider the Kieser method? Look at the second slide (Benefits of Strength Training): all the principal benefits are listed there. For me personally, the “greater function and independence (as one gets older), would be the most important. Too young? Too old? Their clients age range is from 13 to 91 years old...

Now, of course you could do your own strength training, either at home or at a “standard” gym. But… the equipment at Kieser isn’t available at a normal gym. Nor will you find the advice and supervision of a tertiary qualified Exercise Scientist and Exercise Physiologist.

In view of the strong interest shown this morning, it was decided that we’ll organise an on-site Vocational Outing to their clinic. This is tentatively set for  Wednesday 13th November 2024, in place of a standard meeting.

<-- The potential consequences of  unsupervised strength training...

I’ve decided to forget about getting back to my original weight. I’m ok with that. After all, 6 pounds 3 ounces is just not realistic.

It seems to me that people have vast potential.  Most people can do extraordinary things if they have the confidence or take the risks.  Yet, most people don’t.  They sit in front of the telly and treat life as if it goes on forever. Phillip Adams.

Ok, it helps if you know a little bit of French for this one:
At the Cats Olympics, an Aussie and a French cat swam in the final of a swimming race [yes, I know, cats don't like water, but these two do!]. The Aussie cat is called OneTwoThree, the French cat is called UnDeuxTrois. Which one won? The Aussie cat (of course). Why? Because the UnDeuxTrois cat sank. [Alright, I'll see myself out. Ed.]
